Talkhouse Playlist: ’70s and ’00s Pop Music from Band Practice & Catherine Cohen

"Also, I'd like to publicly apologize for trying to DJ every UberPOOL I'm in by playing this [Kate Bush] song."

Today's playlist comes to us from Band Practice & Catherine Cohen. Their new album, Friends Live Vol. 1, is a part of the Friends Live collaborative series, which features musicians, artists, and poets performing together. The album was recorded live at Silent Barn in Brooklyn in early 2016 and is out now from JMC Aggregate. Band Practice, aka Jeanette Wall, and Catherine Cohen connected again to bring us this pop playlist about their friendship.

Jeanette Wall:

Squeeze – “Tempted"
One time, Catherine came to a show I was throwing, and I walked up to her immediately and sang this to her. It was the moment we fell in love.

Fleetwood Mac – “Everywhere"
When I listen to this song, I imagine Catherine and I singing it to each other at Planet Rose Karaoke.

Stevie Wonder – “I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)"
In the movie of our lives, an image of Catherine and I laughing about brunch will fade out and this song will play as the ending credits roll (not unlike High Fidelity).

Dixie Chicks – “Cowboy Take Me Away"
But I actually do [want what the lyrics want].

The London Theatre Orchestra & Cast – “Every Day A Little Death”
Cath and Peter [Smith, a New York–based performer] made me fall in love with this song when they performed it together at The Duplex [Theater]. I totally died. I'm dead now.

Catherine Cohen:

Kate Bush – “Wuthering Heights”
Oh my DANG, this song will always remind me of dancing and screaming and drinking lots and lots of Modelo in my first Brooklyn apartment with Jeanette. This song is obviously perfect, and now, whenever I hear it, I have a distinct image of Jeanette rolling around on my floor in her signature all-black outfit. Also, I'd like to publicly apologize for trying to DJ every UberPOOL I'm in by playing this song.

New Order – “Age of Consent”
I mean, come on!! This song gets me pumped up and also pulls my li'l heart strings. I used to listen to it while riding my bike over the Williamsburg Bridge and wondering if I would ever find love again!!!

Sheryl Crow – “Every Day is a Winding Road”
This song makes me LOL. Honestly...every day? Yeah, it's a winding road, bitch!

Britney Spears – “Toxic”
This song is so fuckin' good. The nude bejeweled body suit from the music vid? Forget it.

Cher – “If I Could Turn Back Time”
Jeanette and I like to substitute every lyric in every song with the word "Cher." That's just the way it is!!
