For 15 years, Matthew S led Illegal Art while shrouded in secrecy. During its run from 1998 to 2012, Illegal Art was more than just a record label — it dismantled preconceived notions of originality in music, what was “allowed” in the industry. Then, we only knew Matthew through a series of pseudonyms, most commonly Philo T. Farnsworth. Now, with the reboot of Illegal Art, Matthew is pulling back the curtain, kickstarting a new chapter for the label while launching a deeply personal project of his own, Myth Math.

Slowspin is the moniker of Pakistan-raised, New York-based sound artist Zeerak Ahmed. Her work is grounded in North Indian classical and matrilineal vocal traditions, expanded through dream-folk, ambient, experimental, electronic, devotional song, and psychedelic sound practices. Poetry and melodies in her mother tongues — Urdu, Purbi and English — form new textural soundscapes for love, loss, and longing. 
Her upcoming album, Afterimage, will be out August 7, 2026.

Ava Mirzadegan and Julie Doiron Are Willing to Talk About the Heavy Stuff

Vorhex Angel features both members of JEFF The Brotherhood and longtime collaborator Kunal Prakash. Not much has been revealed about Vorhex Angel in terms of intentions or influences. They have no social media presence. Sonically, they cover a range: There’s the damaged, and then there is the even more damaged. In one way or another, all of the music takes cues from a large trove of Japanese noise rock—Les Rallizes Dénudés, High Rise, White Heaven—and uses those influences as a jumping off point for improvisation. Is Vorhex Angel a jam band? Maybe if you swap out the Allman Brothers for Acid Mothers Temple. What we do know: These are lifers fully off the leash, unburdened by the structures of industry, making music as free as a seraphic being floating above a stack of amps in a dive bar.
Their latest record, Drain, is out now on Soul Selects.

Primitive Ring consists of Bert Hoover (Hooveriii, Groop), Jon Modaff (Hooveriii, Groop, Frankie and the Witch Fingers), and Charles Moothart (Fuzz, GØGGS). The three LA based musicians found each other in a collective state of high functioning de evolution, and collectively agreed to bend the knee to the primal instincts of melody and rhythm.

Zachary Ray Sherman is an actor, director, writer, and producer from Portland, Oregon, whose new film <a href="https://tubitv.com/movies/100022519/all-that-fall" target="_blank" rel="noopener">All That Fall</a> is now streaming. After early success opposite Kirsten Dunst in Lifetime’s Fifteen and Pregnant, and as Jasper on the CW’s reboot of 90210, Sherman has gone on to build an impressive acting resume balancing television work (Netflix’s Everything Sucks!) with edgy roles in independent films (Archie’s Final Project, West Virginia Stories, Cuck). Sherman has also directed three feature films to date: Particular Crowd and Mar Vista’s upcoming Do You Hear What I Hear, the award-winning indie All That Fall and HBO’s Young Hearts, a sweet and touching coming-of-age film executive-produced by the Duplass brothers. DJ Premier is a producer and DJ, and was half of the hip hop duo Gang Starr. He is now half of the hip hop duo PRhyme, together with Royce Da 5&#8217;9&#8243;.
Prince Paul is a producer, DJ and musician perhaps best known for his work on De La Soul’s 1989 seminal debut album 3 Feet High and Rising. Most recently, he, along with Ladybug Mecca, Don Newkirk and Rodrigo Brandão, formed Brookzill, whose debut album, Throwback to the Future, is out now.
