The New Zealand electronic artist shares his “essential songs for the daily runner.”

I’m the sort of person who doesn’t need a theme or tempo range for fitness; I can listen to almost anything. That being said, these are my favorite right now for fitness specifically.

Mk.gee — “I Want”
This is such a mood setter. It’s the first track in a lot of my playlists. I love the hats that come in at 3:25 — like, where have you been? I’m not sure, but they’re here now and that’s what matters.

The Japanese House — “Something Has to Change”
Quite often, I’ve gone on a run because I’m in a rut mentally and need a moment to reset. The lyrics to this song are very poignant in those moments, and it helps spur me into action.

Ice Spice — “Did It First (ft. Central Cee)”
The sample in this song is incredible, very Clams Casino-esque. The song makes me wanna twerk but I have no ass. Highly rated.

Caribou — “Honey”
I love that Dan Snaith is 46 and still making absolute heaters like this. It gives me hope for my future. The build is perfectly done and the tension is perfectly released.

 Charli XCX — “360”
Such a good feeling listening to this early to mid-jog. The video is iconic also. Makes you wanna dance and helps numb the pain in your legs.

Headache and Vegyn — “Miss Understood”
The first time I heard this song, I laughed because I thought it was so ridiculous. I’d never heard anything like it before, and although it took some warming to, it’s now a staple of my longer runs and late-night drives. It’s a strange, unsettling kind of euphoria that builds off what seems to be a daydream-inspired poem... genius. It instantly puts me alone in a misty valley.

Duskus — “Cut”
I love the sound design in this. Great tempo for running and leaves room for the listener to think.

Alex G — “Runner”
Beautiful and honest. Makes me happy when he screams at 1:45. Has “Run” somewhere in the title.

DJ Streaks — “Song For Aubrey”
Remix of "Lens" by Frank Ocean. Perfectly put together here into a higher tempo, longer format track. It burns perfectly on a run. Simple and satisfying.

Fleetwood Mac — “Gypsy”
Something about listening to this song while you’re on the move makes it hit infinitely harder. Feels like you’re on an adventure and not a painful, sweaty slog. My friend Rutger showed this to me for the first time this year. I can’t believe I hadn’t heard it before, he was jealous I got to experience it for the first time, and I understand why. Euphoric and forever a classic. The solo at 3:40 is absurd — I love it.
