Talkhouse Weekend Playlist: Nineties Nostalgia with The Beaches

The Canadian rock band likes taking late night summer drives with The Sundays and contemplative walks alone with The Cranberries.

Don't you love it when you and a band have a similar taste in music? That's essentially what's going on here for me. The Beaches' keyboardist/guitarist Leandra Earl handpicked these tracks, which all feature some amazing '90s female-fronted alt bands, for this edition of our weekend playlist, and there are a ton of great records represented here. It's always hard to narrow it down to just one song. Speaking of great records: you cannot skip over The Beaches' latest album, Blame My Ex, (self-released last year). The band has been reaching new heights in 2024, playing some amazing festivals and steadily climbing the charts. Oh, and did I forget to mention that they just opened for The Rolling Stones‽

The Sundays — "Here’s Where the Story Ends"
I LOVE THE SUNDAYS. They only have three albums and they’re all perfect. I picked up this cassette at a record store a few years ago and it reminds me of late night summer drives. This song in particular is one of my favorites from their album Reading, Writing & Arithmetic.

Lush — "I Have The Moon"
I think the lyrics are just gorgeous. I love it.

The Cranberries — "Sunday"
It was gonna be this or “Linger” (obviously). It’s the perfect song for falling in love and wondering if the feeling is reciprocated. It’s a song you listen to on walks alone while thinking about someone and smiling to yourself.

Mazzy Star — "Fade Into You"
Probably one of my favorite songs ever. It just perfectly captures the feeling of falling for someone. I love romanticizing my life to it.

Cocteau Twins — "Heaven or Las Vegas"
First song I heard by the Cocteau Twins and I became instantly obsessed with the band.

Sneaker Pimps — "6 Underground"
Heard this song in Yellowjackets and I’ve been obsessed with it ever since. This entire album is amazing.

The Breeders — "Drivin' on 9"
I love the Breeders!!! This is such a great album and this song is just such a cool one.

Throwing Muses — "Not Too Soon"
I love the chorus on this one, it always gets stuck in my head. I love listening to it on long drives.

Veronica Salt — "Seether"
This one was also in Yellowjackets (the show has a really amazing soundtrack).

Liz Phair — "Supernova"
This is one my mom’s favorite songs so I grew up with it, and it’s always been a favorite of mine! I love this album.
