The Responsibility (and Fear) of Telling the Extraordinary Life of Anton Yelchin

Alexandria Bombach is an award-winning cinematographer, editor, and director from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her current film, <a href="http://www.onhershouldersfilm.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">On Her Shoulders</a>, a portrait of Yazidi human rights activist and recent Nobel Peace Prize winner Nadia Murad, is out through Oscilloscope from October 19. Alexandria&#8217;s first feature-length documentary, Frame By Frame, followed the lives of four Afghan photojournalists who were facing the realities of building Afghanistan&#8217;s first free press. The film had its world premiere at SXSW 2015, went on to win more than 25 film festival awards, and screened for the president of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani. Alexandria continued her work in Afghanistan in 2016, directing the Pulitzer Center-supported New York Times Op-Doc, Afghanistan By Choice, an intertwining portrait of five Afghans who had to weigh the costs of leaving or staying as the country&#8217;s security deteriorated. In addition to her feature documentary work, Alexandria’s production company Red Reel has been producing award-winning, character-driven stories since 2009. Her 2013 film Common Ground unearthed the emotion behind a proposed wilderness-area addition for a community in Montana as heritage and tradition are seemingly defended on both sides. Her Emmy award-winning 2012 series Moveshake captured the internal conflicts of people dedicating their lives to a cause.

Amy Scott is a director and editor living in Los Angeles. A former media producer for the University of Chicago, she has been editing social issue documentaries for over fifteen years. Amy began to recognize the impact of the interview while working for Studs Terkel cataloging his radio interview archive at the Chicago History Museum. <a href="http://hal.oscilloscope.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hal</a>, her feature-length directorial debut, is out now in select theaters through Oscilloscope.

The Other Films of Our Lives

After attending Los Angeles City College’s film school, Kevin Tent got his first break editing the film Not of This Earth for legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman. Simultaneously Tent tapped into the emerging US Independent film movement, cutting the underground hit Guncrazy, directed by Tamra Davis, and then Citizen Ruth by director Alexander Payne. Tent has cut all of Payne’s movies since, including Election, Sideways, The Descendants (for which he received an Academy Award® nomination) and most recently Downsizing. After his long and sordid career in editing, Tent makes his directorial debut with Crash Pad an Original Black List selected screenplay written by Jeremy Catalino. The comedy, starring Domnhall Gleason, Thomas Haden Church and Christina Applegate, opens theatrically on October 27 through Vertical Entertainment.

Kelly Loudenberg is a filmmaker and artist who has been exploring the American justice system for more than a decade, most recently through The Confession Tapes, the Netflix series she created and directed. This project has grown out of her work profiling individuals, systems and the grey areas of culpability and coercion. Kelly has contributed to the Atlantic, the New York Times, the New Yorker, and National Geographic. Her work has been shown at the Venice Architecture Biennale, Monte Vista Projects, SXSW Film Festival, and the Guggenheim Labs. She has also been artist-in-residence at the Nevada Museum of Art, the Center for Land Use Interpretation and Casa Wabi in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. As an editor, Lance Edmands has cut several acclaimed features including Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell and Tiny Furniture. He has also directed commercial campaigns for brands like Chevy, Nationwide, Ford and Blue Cross. His first feature as writer/director, Bluebird, premiered at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival and went on to screen at the Karlovy Vary, Vienna, Busan, Stockholm and Chicago International Film Festivals, picking up several awards along the way. Bluebird was released by Factory 25 and Sundance Artist Services and is currently in theaters.
