Three Great Things: Jeff Baena

Best known for his portrayal of Walter “Flynn” White Jr. on Breaking Bad, RJ Mitte is an actor, advocate and philanthropist who has carved out his niche in Hollywood by breaking down stereotypes and changing people’s mindsets with his easy going demeanor and positive outlook. He currently stars in the inspirational wrestling drama Triumph, also Terrence Howard. At the age of three, Louisiana native Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, but that has never deterred his drive to succeed in television and film. A chance encounter with a casting director led to his move to Los Angeles and Mitte quickly landed roles on various shows such as Weeds, Vegas, Everybody Hates Chris and co-starred on ABC Family’s primetime hit show Switched at Birth, before being cast in his life-changing role on Breaking Bad. Mitte has since made his way to the big screen, starring in multiple indie films in the past few years, including Dixieland, starring in his first non-handicapped leading role, and Time Share, winner of Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Screenwriting in 2018. Actor Theo Rossi will next be seen in Zack Snyder’s Army Of The Dead for Netflix releasing globally May 21, and he is currently in production on the Netflix series True Story, opposite Kevin Hart and Wesley Snipes. He was one of the stars of FX’s hit show Sons of Anarchy, playing Juan Carlos “Juice” Ortiz, and also portrayed Shades on the Marvel Netflix series Luke Cage. On the big screen, Rossi was most recently seen in Nate Parker’s American Skin, while his other notable film credits include Lowriders, opposite Demián Birchir, and Vault, also starring Don Johnson. In 2015, Rossi starred in and produced Bad Hurt, his first film with Emma Tillinger Koskoff under his DosDudes Pictures banner. When not filming, Rossi is the host of the podcast <a href="https://www.patreon.com/THEOryPOD" target="_blank" rel="noopener">THEOry</a>, with fellow actor Kim Coates and resides with his wife and two children in Austin, Texas.

Shakey Graves is the brainchild of Alejandro Rose-Garcia, who released Roll The Bones on Bandcamp in 2011 without any promotion and little information about Shakey Graves. That year, Bandcamp made it a featured album for a month and from there it has stayed among the website’s top-selling records. Rose-Garcia has released a ranging catalog since, but just released a tenth anniversary edition of Roll The Bones complete with 15 additional tracks and a new vinyl pressing.

Max Richter is one of the most influential figures in contemporary music. Known for his groundbreaking work as a composer, pianist, recording artist and collaborator, he is the subject of the new documentary <a href="https://mubi.com/films/max-richter-s-sleep" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Max Richter’s Sleep</a>, which is now streaming exclusively on Mubi. He is best known for his genre-defining solo albums including The Blue Notebooks, Memoryhouse and the eight-hour epic Sleep. His 2012 record Recomposed By Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons topped the classical charts in 22 countries. Richter has written widely for ballet, opera, and film. His most recent projects include scoring Hollywood film soundtracks, including Ad Astra starring Brad Pitt and director Josie Rourke’s historical drama Mary Queen of Scots, and music for Tom Hardy’s TV series Taboo, which earned him an Emmy nomination. Almost entirely acoustic, Island begins with 13 darkened chords, and was recorded live at Abbey Road Studios with the London Contemporary Orchestra. The introduction is sound of waking up alone, and on the shore of a strange land. What follows is a shimmering and luscious orchestral album that draws across the full breadth of Pallett’s discography, from Heartland’s Technicolor to the glittering, fingerpicked guitar that marked Pallett’s first records with their trio, Les Mouches.

Across almost 25 years, Michael Feuerstack has built an underground canon of crooked and beautiful songs. Aside from his own song-craft under his name and former alias Snailhouse, his reputation is also as an exceptional collaborator, producer and general facilitator of music. Mike is a core member of Bell Orchestre, producer for Camille Delean, Paper Beat Scissors, and has contributed to countless performances and recordings with the likes of The Luyas, Thus Owls, Land of Talk, Julie Doiron, and many many more. While Feuerstack arranged and recorded his new album Harmonize the Moon completely solo at his apartment in the spring of 2020, the songs that compose it were written over the past couple years, on wanderings and tours as well as at home. He embarked on a slow process of balancing the poetic with the narrative, producing songs that flow naturally instead of adhering too rigidly to established forms. The result is a collection that’s pensive but playful, introspective yet generous, and achingly intimate.

As a band, Lake Street Dive epitomizes democracy in action: the group, expanded into a quintet since touring keyboardist Akie Bermiss officially joined in 2017, share writing and arrangement duties. Their personalities, skills, and wide-ranging taste in pop, rock, R&amp;B, and jazz have long blended together to make an impressively cohesive sound, both sophisticated and playful, combining retro influences with contemporary attitude. For their new album Obviously, the band turned to Mike Elizondo — songwriting collaborator for Dr. Dre and Eminem, producer for Fiona Apple, Mary J. Blige, and more — to help flesh things out and take them in a new direction.

Imagineering, and he co-founded the performance-art collective A.BANDIT. The film of <a href="https://www.hulu.com/movie/derek-delgaudios-in-of-itself-19b9d405-40b2-483e-8e1f-e25fe10c7299" target="_blank" rel="noopener">In &amp; Of Itself</a>, directed by Frank Oz, is currently streaming on Hulu, and DelGaudio&#8217;s new book, <a href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/624082/amoralman-by-derek-delgaudio/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AMORALMAN: A True Story and Other Lies</a>, is available for purchase from all good booksellers.

Push Back is the first full-length record from Jetty Bones, the relentlessly hopeful alt-pop solo project of Ohio artist Kelc Galluzzo. Galluzzo worked alongside producer and mixer John Fields (Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus) to fully realize a set of bedroom recordings she had mapped out in 2019. The 11 songs on Push Back document Galluzzo’s wrestle between two selves: the one on stage espousing hope and love, and the one in the van after the show crying helplessly, living with depression, anxiety, impostor syndrome, and suicidal ideations. The record tracks Galluzzo’s reckoning with these two selves, willing them to meet in a permanent ceasefire where they can coexist.
