The Way We Get By: Tom Russo is Literally Stopping to Smell the Roses

Matt Sharp launched The Rentals in 1995 with The Return of The Rentals while Weezer was on hiatus between the Blue Album and Pinkerton. The album spawned the hit “Friends of P” and the project became Sharp’s full-time gig departing Weezer after Pinkerton’s release in 1996. The Rentals&#8217; official fourth LP, a sci-fi themed, 16-track double-album opus Q36 is out now, featuring contributions from Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (The KIllers) and Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Tame Impala, Mercury Rev, etc.). Over the past quarter century the amorphous group has featured contributions from Petra Haden (That Dog), Maya Rudolph, Damon Albarn (Gorillaz/Blur), Tim Wheeler (Ash), Donna Matthews (Elastica), Miki Berenyi (Lush), Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig (Lucius), Patrick Carney (The Black Keys), amongst many others. With Q36 Sharp takes the collaborative nature even further, creating new merchandise items for every single with visual artist Ivan Minsloff and connecting with the community at HITRECORD.org.

The Way We Get By: Matt Sharp Is Loving the Escapism of ZeroZeroZero

Richard Kind currently stars as The Architect in The Social Ones, which is available now on all digital and cable platforms. He is an accomplished stage, screen and television performer who continues to redefine the term character actor. Richard appeared in the Academy Award-winning Best Picture Argo for director Ben Affleck and starred as ‘Bing Bong’ in the hit Pixar film Inside Out. He played a memorable, heartbreaking role in Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter, was Uncle Arthur in the critically acclaimed A Serious Man written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, and worked a second time with the Coen brothers in Suburbicon, directed by George Clooney. Additional film credits include a two time collaboration with Tom McCarthy in The Visitor and The Station Agent. He has voiced characters in A Bug’s Life, Cars and the television series Summer Camp Island, Big Mouth and American Dad. Apart from his infamous roles on Spin City and Mad About You, Richard was also a series regular on the acclaimed HBO series Luck as well as three seasons on Amazon’s Red Oaks. This season, Richard will reprise his recurring role as Cousin Andy on Curb Your Enthusiasm and most recently he completed shooting a season of Brockmire opposite Hank Azaria.

The Way We Get By: Richard Kind on Quarantine Isolation and Babylon Berlin

Delroy Lindo can now be seen in Spike Lee’s new film Da 5 Bloods. Lindo has had memorable roles in films such as The Cider House Rules and Heist, and previously garnered critical acclaim in a trio of films with director Lee: Clockers, Crooklyn and Malcolm X. Other notable films include Wondrous Oblivion, Ransom, Get Shorty, Romeo Must Die, This Christmas (also as executive producer), and Pixar’s Up! On TV, he currently appears as Adrian Boseman in CBS’ The Good Fight (sequel to The Good Wife) and won an NAACP Award for a guest appearance on Law and Order: SVU. Also for TV, he produced and directed documentary interview films featuring Spike Lee, Charles Burnett and Joan Chen. On Broadway, Lindo received Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations playing Herald Loomis in August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, and played Walter Lee in the Kennedy Center and Los Angeles productions of A Raisin in the Sun (Helen Hayes Award Nomination and NAACP Image Award, Best Actor). Josephine Decker’s latest feature <a href="https://neonrated.com/films/shirley" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shirley</a>, starring Elisabeth Moss, Michael Stuhlbarg, Odessa Young and Logan Lerman, premiered in competition at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and is released on Hulu, VOD and participating drive-ins June 5, 2020. Her previous feature, Madeline’s Madeline, world premiered at Sundance 2018; it was hailed as a “mind-scrambling masterpiece” and was nominated for Best Picture at IFP’s Gotham Awards and for two Independent Spirit Awards. Josephine premiered her first two narrative features, Thou Wast Mild and Lovely and Butter on the Latch, at the Berlinale Forum 2014 to critical acclaim. She also explores collaborative storytelling via TV directing, documentary making, performance art, accordion-playing, acting, teaching at CalArts and Princeton University, and leading artist residencies with the School of Making Thinking.

The Way We Get By: Josephine Decker Takes Us on a Poetry Walk

Varsity came to fruition one night in 2013 when several Chicago musicians gathered for a &#8220;salon night&#8221; where friends shared stories and songs. Singer-keyboardist Stephanie Smith was set to perform solo, but was quickly drawn to the sound of guitarists Dylan Weschler and Pat Stanton and asked them to join her. Shortly after their first performance as a trio, they recruited Jake Stolz on drums and his brother, Paul Stolz, on bass to fully round out their sound and become the quintet that they are today. Varsity played shows in the Chicago area the following year and spent one weekend at Chicago&#8217;s Public House Studio to record their debut self-titled LP released in March 2015.
Varsity has since found success in the growing indie-pop space. The powerful driving vocals of singer/keyboardist Stephanie Smith over infectious guitar melodies and exciting rhythm has them frequently sharing bills with artists including American Wrestlers, Alvvays, Courtney Barnett, The Hold Steady, and Car Seat Headrest. The band has further explored and developed their sound across a variety of digital releases—often two complementary singles at a time —that have earned rave reviews and a growing audience with millions of plays on YouTube and Spotify.

The Way We Get By: Varsity Has Gotten Really Good at Identifying Mushrooms

Named &#8220;One to Watch&#8221; by BBC tastemaker Annie Mac, Kat Cunning (aka Katrina Cunningham) is an actor and recording artist with a degree in concert dance. Cunning, who prefers to be gender neutral, made their television debut in HBO&#8217;s The Deuce starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal, playing Franco’s love interest, Christina Fuego. They currently co-stars in the NETFLIX YA hit TRINKETS as Sabine. TRINKETS will see its second season this year.
A rising voice on the NYC arts scene, Cunning opened for recording artist LP on their sold out North American tour in late 2019, performed on Broadway in &#8216;Dangerous Liaisons,&#8217; Cirque Du Soleil&#8217;s &#8216;Paramour,&#8217; Punch Drunk’s  ‘Sleep No More’ and was a featured performer in Refinery 29&#8217;s sold out 29Rooms exhibit with famed artist Juno Calypso.

Martin Courtney is the singer-guitarist of the Brooklyn band Real Estate, whose fifth album The Main Thing was released earlier this year. Barry Sonnenfeld’s book <a href="https://www.hachettebooks.com/titles/barry-sonnenfeld/barry-sonnenfeld-call-your-mother/9780316415613/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Barry Sonnenfeld, Call Your Mother Memoirs of a Neurotic Filmmaker</a> is now out through Hachette Books. Sonnenfeld is a filmmaker and writer who broke into the film industry as the cinematographer on the Coen Brothers’ first three films: Blood Simple, Raising Arizona, and Miller’s Crossing. He also was the director of photography on Throw Mamma from the Train, Big, When Harry Met Sally, and Misery. Sonnenfeld made his directorial debut with The Addams Family in 1991, and has gone on to direct a number of films including Addams Family Values, Get Shorty, and the first three Men in Blacks. Pete Yorn is equally indebted to Bruce Springsteen’s blue-collar introspection as Lou Reed’s deadpan stream-of-consciousness. He first broke out in 2001 with his extraordinary Columbia Records debut, Musicforthemorningafter, which was hailed by NPR as one of the year’s finest and Rolling Stone praised it as “atmospheric, gently lit by sunlight and regret.” In the decades that followed, Yorn solidified his status as a songwriters’ songwriter, releasing six more solo albums and collaborating in the studio with everyone from Frank Black and Peter Buck to Liz Phair and Scarlett Johansson (Yorn and Johansson’s joint 2009 release, Break Up, went Platinum in France). Yorn has performed on a plethora of TV shows including Letterman, Fallon, Kimmel, Ellen and more; as well as sharing the stage on tours with artists as varied as R.E.M., Coldplay, My Morning Jacket, Foo Fighters and The Dixie Chicks, and festival slots from Coachella and Bonnaroo to Glastonbury and Austin City Limits.
