Seamus Murphy’s latest documentary, <a href="https://filmforum.org/film/pj-harvey-a-dog-called-money" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PJ Harvey: A Dog Called Money</a>, a meditation on the creation process which premiered at the Berlinale 2019, is out now via Film Forum. The photographer and filmmaker has won seven World Press Photo awards for his work in Afghanistan, Gaza, Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Peru and Ireland. His work from Afghanistan is in the collections of The Getty Museum, Los Angeles and Imperial War Museum, London. He is the author of four books of photography. On the Road with House of Homeland

Van Ditthavong was born in Vientiane, Laos and immigrated to the U.S. when he was four years old. He began his career as an award-winning still photographer before transitioning to filmmaking. His feature directing debut, <a href="http://www.allroadstopearla.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">All Roads To Pearla</a>, starring Alex MacNicoll, Addison Timlin, Nick Chinlund, and Dash Mihok and produced by Red Entertainment and goPOP FILMS, is in theaters and on demand from September 25th. It world premiered in competition at the 26th Austin Film Festival and is nominated for the 2020 Texas Independent Film Award by the Houston Film Critics Society. Van is also the founding partner and executive producer of goPOP FILMS – a creative content studio and production company representing some of the most exciting directors working today. He has taught at the New York Film Academy (Los Angeles) and UCLA Extension – where he received the 2015 Outstanding Instructor of the Year honor for the Visual Arts Department.

Pete Souza is the subject of the documentary The Way I See It, out now in theaters through Focus Features. Souza was the Chief Official White House Photographer for President Obama and the Director of the White House Photo Office. Previously Souza was an Assistant Professor of Photojournalism at Ohio University, the national photographer for the Chicago Tribune, a freelancer for National Geographic, and an Official White House Photographer for President Reagan. His books include the New York Times bestseller The Rise of Barack Obama, which documents the president’s meteoric ascent from his first day in the United States Senate through the 2008 Pennsylvania presidential primary, and the #1 New York Times bestseller Obama: An Intimate Portrait. Souza is currently a freelance photographer based in Washington, D.C., and is a Professor Emeritus at Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication.

Jay Giampietro is a writer, director, actor and musician whose short films have played the New York Film Festival, BAMcinemaFest, and the Montclair and Maryland Film Festivals. His short film Hernia won the 2015 Hammer to Nail Summer Shorts contest and he made his acting debut in the feature Stinking Heaven, which was distributed by Factory 25. His <a href="https://www.instagram.com/jaygiampietro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">street photography</a> capturing the eccentric denizens of New York City has been praised by The Village Voice, British GQ and The Guardian and is the subject of Joe Stankus&#8217; short documentary <a href="https://vimeo.com/257314493" target="_blank" rel="noopener">I’ve Never Been A Fisherman</a>. His most recent short films are <a href="https://vimeo.com/314395817" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Quarterbacks</a> (2018) and <a href="https://vimeo.com/245097348" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Unpresidented</a> (2017).

Jason Tippet is a filmmaker living in Los Angeles. During his final year at CalArts, he directed the documentary short Thompson, which played Sundance and won the Jury Award at SXSW. In 2012, he directed with Elizabeth Mims the acclaimed documentary Only the Young, which was released theatrically by Oscilloscope. Jason was named as one of the &#8220;25 New Faces of Independent Film&#8221; by Filmmaker magazine and the National Board of Review named Only the Young one of its top five films of the year. Jason is currently directing on the new season of Drunk History. His first book of photography, <a href="https://store.oscilloscope.net/collections/oscilloscope-merch/products/heading-to-bills-for-cigarettes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Heading to Bill&#8217;s for Cigarettes</a>, is out now through Oscilloscope.

How I Rediscovered My Love of Storytelling Through Street Photography

When Remember Sports recorded Sunchokes in 2014 while Carmen Perry (vocals, guitar), Catherine Dwyer (guitar), Benji Dossetter (drums) and James Karlin (bass) attended Kenyon College in Gambier, OH, they had no intention of pursuing music seriously. It was recorded with the wide-eyed optimism of making a record for the sake of it. To create something they could share with their friends. To make something they could simply look back on.
The band – then called Sports – started in 2012, coming up through the pocket of their folk and DIY punk scene. Quietly released on Bandcamp, Sunchokes gained traction through word of mouth and social media. Now, five years later, following the departure of Dossetter and Karlin and addition of Jack Washburn (guitar) and Connor Perry (drums), Sunchokes has been remastered – by band friend Lucas Knapp – for a special anniversary release, on vinyl and CD for the first time ever. The remastered album also includes eight bonus songs including a few original demos and Addie Pray (Carmen&#8217;s solo project) versions of the songs. A twenty page memory book, featuring playlists, photos and more, will also accompany the release.

Since opening his studio in New York City in 1983, photographer Stephen Wilkes has built an unprecedented body of work and a reputation as one of America’s most iconic photographers, widely recognized for his fine art, editorial and commercial work. Wilkes directorial debut, the documentary film, <a href="http://jaymyself.oscilloscope.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jay Myself</a>, world premiered to a sold out crowd at DOCNYC November 11, 2018. The film, an in-depth look into the world of photographer Jay Maisel and his move out of his 35,000 sq. foot building at 190 Bowery, opens in select theaters through Oscilloscope from July 31. A Letter to Jay

Emily Alone is a collection of songs made by Florist songwriter Emily Sprague during a time of great stillness and isolation with the self. An attempt to capture the dark spaces between change and acknowledge their beauty. It is a natural, isolated, and momentary tangent away from the otherwise collaborative project that is Florist, while still maintaining the documentary nature of the band that, like all things, is a mutable entity in this universe. These songs, as they exist now, were born partly out of literal distance from her bandmates on the East Coast, and partly out of urgency to translate an emotional moment.
Emily wrote and recorded all 12 tracks in her Los Angeles home during the last, rainy months of 2018. After moving to California from New York a year prior, Emily found herself in a transformative time of self exploration and independence after leaving the many lives she knew of as home on the East Coast to start on a new journey. Living alone and separate from many of the things she once held most close, a deep dive into the dark void of the mind began. There is a metaphysical quality to the songs as they search for meaning in existence, swaying between the mundane and the spiritual. Emily believes deeply in the magic and connectedness of all things. The album Emily Alone is the creation of a self reflective lens through which we can view that omnipresence of love and life and the energy of all things around us as well as within us.
