The Power of Being Seen

Bo McGuire is the writer-director-producer of the transgenerational docudrama Socks on Fire, which had its world premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival. He was born the queer son of a Waffle House cook and his third-shift waitress in Hokes Bluff, Alabama. The first movie he truly fell for was the music video for Reba McEntire’s “Fancy.” He is a 2019 Ryan Murphy + Half Initiative Mentee and was recently selected one of Filmmaker magazine’s 2019 “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” Socks on Fire, his debut feature, was supported by Cinereach, Field of Vision, Doc Society, Southern Documentary Fund, IFP, and Film Independent. The film also won the Cuban Hat Award for best pitch at the Hot Docs Pitch Forum. His original television pilot, Shitbird, was selected by Spike Lee to receive the Sandra Ifraimova Award and his feature script Alabama Snipe Fight appeared on NYU’s Purple List. He belongs to the First Church of Dolly Parton.

Low Tide is the recording project of Eli Oberman and Courtney Robbins. Robbins and Oberman are current members of NY feminist punk band The Shondes (Rolling Stone, SPIN, BUST). The Alchemist, entirely self-produced, will be Oberman&#8217;s first solo record as a nonbinary artist, carefully constructed to relate the “holy balance” necessary to facilitate a meaningful and contented reality.
Low Tide take the arduous expanse of existence and condense it into a series of lovingly orchestrated and tenderly sung compositions. The Alchemist conspires to embrace the complexities of life, the fractious nature of existence, the elemental way humanity seems to simultaneously be disassembling and recreating, in an effort to simplify how we all manage them — an ostensibly herculean task. Oberman was met with the visage of The Alchemist, a genderless symbol of life’s precarious balancing act that — if balanced appropriately — can engender happiness and joy. Existing in the pastoral crevices that have birthed such mossy-hilled folk-classics as Van Morrison’s Veedon Fleece and, more recently, the trauma-folk of Big Thief and the haunting warmth of Antony and the Johnsons and PJ Harvey, the band’s first release is lucky enough to not only carry this oft-under recognized style, but to insinuate such a unique perspective as to make something anachronistic sound fresh again.
The Alchemist, implicitly baked in the ambiguity of gender, the detritus of our internal and external lives, and a sweeping milieu of gothic romanticism, is a stunning document of not only a band in full bloom, but also an encapsulation of the world we all live in, offering not just a document of life in America in 2019, but also the world’s introduction to what is sure to be an electrifying future for the band.

Kate Bornstein is an author and actor who has for over thirty years been writing groundbreaking books on the subject of nonbinary gender, including Gender Outlaw and My New Gender Workbook. Additionally, Kate has maintained a career in theater, making her Broadway debut in the summer of 2018, co-starring in the Second Stage Theater’s production of Young Jean Lee’s Straight White Men.

For the Fun of It: A Conversation with Kate Bornstein and Eli Oberman

Writer-director Yen Tan&#8216;s latest film is the poignant AIDS drama <a href="http://1985thefilm.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1985</a>, starring Corey Michael Smith, Virginia Madsen and Michael Chiklis; it was inspired by Tan&#8217;s Short of the Week of the same title, which won a Special Jury Award at SXSW 2016. Tan&#8217;s previous feature, the critically acclaimed Pit Stop, premiered at Sundance 2013 and was nominated for a John Cassavetes Awards at the 2014 Film Independent Spirit Awards. His 2008 feature, Ciao, was a Queer Lion contender at Venice Film Festival. Yen also co-directed Until We Could (2014) with David Lowery, an Addy-winning PSA for Freedom to Marry that was narrated by Robin Wright and Ben Foster. Reclaiming the Narrative is a Work in Progress

Erin Sanger is a writer and director whose work spans both narrative and documentary realms. She is a Wasserman Award Winner, Student Academy Award Nominee, and Webby Award Honoree. Her directorial work has been featured on ESPN, National Geographic, PBS, The Atlantic, Topic, and Hulu. She is currently completing her first feature-length documentary. She is a graduate of NYU&#8217;s Tisch School of the Arts.
Taylor Hess is a filmmaker, journalist, and contributing editor for Filmmaker Magazine. She recently wrote and directed two episodes for a Vox Media documentary series on Netflix and directed a short documentary for The Atlantic called Guts. She’s produced at Part2 Pictures and has worked at Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions, the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP), and for Scott Rudin Productions. Taylor is a graduate from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Brian Falduto is a former actor, and currently is a singer-songwriter and life coach. He was recently named one of the “20 most influential, outspoken, and optimistic individuals on the planet” by PrideLife Magazine in their 20th Anniversary #20intheir20s issue. Brian is the founder of his own life coaching business in compliance with the International Coach Federation standards as well as the Head of Marketing for the Gay Coaches Alliance. On Instagram, he is <a href="https://www.instagram.com/thegaylifecoach/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@thegaylifecoach</a>. Brian’s first studio album, Stage Two, is out now featuring the lead single “Rainy Day.”

Patricia Rozema is the writer, director and producer of Mouthpiece, which is now in theaters through Crucial Things and First Generation Films. After an Honors B.A. in Philosophy and English from Calvin College in Michigan, she distinguished herself as a writer/director with her internationally celebrated first comedy feature, I&#8217;ve Heard the Mermaids Singing, at the Director&#8217;s Fortnight in Cannes, where it won the Prix de la Jeunesse. It then opened the Toronto International Film Festival in 1987. Other highlights: writing/directing the contemporary lesbian love story When Night is Falling, adapting/directing the politically progressive Miramax JaneAusten feature Mansfield Park with Harold Pinter, and co-writing HBO’s Grey Gardens, starring DrewBarrymore and Jessica Lange, which won her a PEN Screenwriter&#8217;s award, an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe. She also won an Emmy for writing and directing a Yo-Yo Ma/Bach film, Six Gestures. In 2015, Rozema adapted and directed the apocalyptic thriller Into the Forest, with Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood. She has also directed Anne with an E and Mozart in the Jungle for Netflix/CBC and Amazon. She is a member of theAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Donal Mosher is a filmmaker, photographer, writer, and musician. He is the collaborative director with Michael Palmieri of the award-winning documentary features 
<a href="https://www.kinolorber.com/film/thegospelofeureka" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Gospel of Eureka</a> (out February 8), October Country, Off Label and the shorts Rougarouing, Marseilles and most recently Peace in the Valley for Field of Vision. Alongside filmmaking he has published fiction, non-fiction, and reviews including a contribution to the LAMBDA Award-winning anthology Portland Queer. His recent photographic work, The Vibrancy is Killing Me, was on exhibition in Munich, Germany in 2015. Revisited: Southern Discomfort, Or What I Learned About Queerness and Telling Other People’s Stories

It was 2006, and Kings of Spade moved from Honolulu to Los Angeles to chase their dreams. But the jungle, as we’ve learned, isn’t always so welcoming. Singer KC and drummer Matt Kato were barely scraping by. A majority of the feisty anthems on the group’s new full-length, Kings of Spade (on Soundly Music), comes from simply not letting tough times kick them down. Produced by Grammy-winner Dave Cobb (Judah and the Lion, Chris Stapleton), their output (guitarist Jesse Savio and bassist Tim Corker rounds out the band) is at turns soulful and rollicking—never complacent, never dull, always sincere. They recorded Kings of Spade over two weeks in Nashville with Cobb.
