Eugene Jarecki is an award-winning documentary director and producer. His latest film, <a href="http://www.theking.film/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The King</a>, a fascinating musical road trip in Elvis Presley’s 1963 Rolls Royce that explores how the hell we got here and where we are going, is out June 22 through Oscilloscope Films. Jarecki made his film debut with The Trials of Henry Kissinger in 2002, and won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize and a Peabody Award for his 2005 film Why We Fight. In 2010, he created Move Your Money, a viral short encouraging Americans to shift their money from too-big-to-fail banks to community banks and credit unions. His Emmy-award winning 2011 film, Reagan, premiered at Sundance before broadcasting on HBO. The House I Live In, his 2013 film about America&#8217;s War on Drugs, once again won him the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival as well as a second Peabody Award. He executive produced the Sundance award-winning documentary (T)ERROR, as well as Denial, which aired on PBS in 2017. In 2016, Jarecki directed The Cyclist as part of Amazon&#8217;s The New Yorker Presents series.

Making America Great

Lorna Tucker cut her teeth working behind the camera and jumping on tour buses with rock bands such as Unkle, Lupe Fiasco, The Cult and Queens of The Stone Age creating tour videos and music promos. She then moved into longer format storytelling, directing documentaries, writing scripts and creating more experimental video art projects for the likes of Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Nike. Her first feature documentary, <a href="http://www.viviennewestwoodfilm.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Westwood – Punk Icon Activist</a>, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and is being released by Greenwich Entertainment on June 8. This year will also see the release of <a href="https://www.amamovie.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amá</a>, a feature documentary about the sterilization abuses of Native American women across the United States during the last 60 years, which because of its socially sensitive nature has taken a decade to bring to fruition. Tucker was recently <a href="https://www.harpersbazaar.com/uk/culture/entertainment/a20409129/meet-5-breakout-female-film-makers-of-2018/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hailed</a> by Harper&#8217;s Bazaar as one of the top five breakout female filmmakers of 2018.

Overnight Success Takes a Long Time to Happen

Jeremy Frindel is the founder of <a href="http://www.substratumfilms.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Substratum Films</a>, specializing in cinematic portraiture exploring the resilience and majesty of the human spirit. In 2013 Jeremy released his first feature film, <a href="https://zeitgeistfilms.com/film/onetrackheart">One Track Heart: The Story of Krishna Das</a>. Distributed by Zeitgeist Films, the film screened theatrically across the US, and won the Best Documentary prize at the Maui, Dharamsala and Gold Coast Film Festivals among others. Jeremy is in post-production now on his next project, Spacefox, a feature documentary following the reinvention of Marty Friedman from lead guitarist in Megadeth to one of the most famous TV comedians in Japan. The Doctor From India, his second feature, opens June 1 at the Quad Cinema in New York City and is screening across the U.S. courtesy of Zeitgeist Films.

Kate Novack is an Emmy-nominated producer and director of documentary films. Her first feature as director, <a href="https://www.thegospelaccordingtoandre.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Gospel According to André</a>, a documentary portrait of the iconic fashion journalist André Leon Talley, is released by Magnolia Pictures on May 25. Previously, Kate was a producer and writer on Page One: Inside the New York Times, which premiered at Sundance in 2011, and a producer on the HBO feature film A Table in Heaven. With her longtime producing partner Andrew Rossi, Kate has worked as a story consultant on several films, including CNN&#8217;s Ivory Tower (2014), which she also co-produced, and The First Monday In May (2016). Prior to making films, Kate was a reporter at Time, where she covered film, design, television and the arts. She lives in Brooklyn, NY with her husband and two children.

Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Cynthia Hill lives and works in North Carolina. Hill’s company, Markay Media, which has produced award-winning documentary films and television work, is based in Durham. Hill and chef Vivian Howard recently took home an Emmy for outstanding culinary program for A Chef’s Life, the docu-series they co-created which airs on PBS to an audience of 4 million viewers per episode. Hill previously won an Emmy for directing the show, which has recently concluded its fifth season. She also directed the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary Private Violence, and an eight-part series on NASCAR called Road to Race Day for Complex Networks. (Picture by Jeremy Lange.)

How to Make It as a Filmmaker Outside New York and Los Angeles

Natalia Almada is a director, writer, producer and editor who was a 2012 MacArthur “Genius Award” Fellow and recipient of the 2009 Sundance Documentary Directing Award for her film El General. <a href="https://www.cinematropical.com/new-events/new-york-theatrical-release-of-natalia-almadas-everything-else" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Todo lo demás </a>(Everything Else), Almada’s debut feature fiction film, is released theatrically on May 4. Her 2011 film El Velador, about violence in Mexico, premiered at New Directors/New Films and played as part of the Cannes Film Festival Directors’ Fortnight. Her previous credits include All Water Has a Perfect Memory, an experimental short film that premiered at Sundance in 2002, and Al Otro Lado, her 2005 award-winning debut feature documentary on immigration, drug trafficking and corrido music. Almada graduated with a Masters in Fine Arts in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives between Mexico City and San Francisco.

Serena Dykman is a New York–based filmmaker and self-described “culture-clasher” who uses storytelling to connect people through humor, heart, and humanity. A proud third-culture kid, she was born in Paris and raised across Brussels, the French Antilles, London, and New York. A graduate from NYU&#8217;s Tisch School of the Arts, she has made films which range from comedy to drama and documentary, and earned more than 25 awards, including a Webby Award and a Humanitas Prize nomation. At just 23, Serena directed her debut feature documentary, <a href="https://www.nanafilm.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nana</a>, about her grandmother’s survival of Auschwitz. The film was theatrically released by First Run Features and led her to speak internationally at institutions such as the European Commission and Amnesty International. She recently completed three films Babka, At See and M.U.B., and is developing several scripted and unscripted projects. She works between New York, Los Angeles, Europe, and wherever a good story takes her. They directed the Netflix documentary The Battered Bastards of Baseball, which premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and in 2016, they directed a short documentary segment for Amazon&#8217;s docuseries The New Yorker Presents.
