Ricky Staub is a writer-director who founded Neighborhood Film Co., a production company that offers paid apprenticeships and career development to men coming out of incarceration. His first feature film, Concrete Cowboy, starring Idris Elba, Caleb McLaughlin, and Jharrel Jerome premiered in fall 2020 at Telluride and the Toronto International Film Festival and was picked up by Netflix, which released the film on April 2, 2021. He received critical acclaim for his short film, The Cage, a drama that tells the story of a young basketball player growing up in North Philly, overcoming the forces of violence and poverty that surround him. The film won the Grand Prize for Best Narrative Short at the Heartland Film Festival, which qualified it for Academy Award consideration. He is repped at WME &amp; Range Media Partners. Terrifying. Unexpected. Beautiful: The Making of Concrete Cowboy

Jessica Kavana Dornbusch is a writer and director who is best known for her film Love and Debate (2006), a coming-of-age story set in Miami, based on her experiences as a high school and college debater. With continued determination to create made-in-Miami films, Kavana Dornbusch followed her feature film debut with two short films, Escape and Snap, both of which were showcased at film festivals around the world. She has worked for Univision, Televen (in Venezuela) and helped pioneer HTV out of Miami. After seven years in development, Kavana Dornbusch’s second feature film, Reefa, based on the life of murdered Colombian artist, Israel Hernandez, is out April 16 through Vertical Entertainment.

When I Needed Them, My Community Was There for Me

Tom Quinn is the Program Director for Film &amp; Video at Westphal College of Media Arts &amp; Design, a college of Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. His latest film as writer-director, Colewell starring Karen Allen, is in select theaters and on VOD from December 13 through Gravitas Ventures. Colewell is currently nominated for Best Actress (Karen Allen) and the John Cassavetes Award at the 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Tom made his feature directing debut with The New Year Parade (2008), winner of the Best Narrative Grand Jury Award at the Slamdance Film Festival and a nominee for Spirit Awards John Cassavetes Award. In addition to being a writer-director, Tom has also worked as an editor, cinematographer, visual-effects coordinator and producer.

You Write What You Remember, Even When You Forget

Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Cynthia Hill lives and works in North Carolina. Hill’s company, Markay Media, which has produced award-winning documentary films and television work, is based in Durham. Hill and chef Vivian Howard recently took home an Emmy for outstanding culinary program for A Chef’s Life, the docu-series they co-created which airs on PBS to an audience of 4 million viewers per episode. Hill previously won an Emmy for directing the show, which has recently concluded its fifth season. She also directed the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary Private Violence, and an eight-part series on NASCAR called Road to Race Day for Complex Networks. (Picture by Jeremy Lange.)

How to Make It as a Filmmaker Outside New York and Los Angeles

Sara Lucas is a singer, songwriter and guitarist based in New York. With Ryan Seaton, she is co-founder of Callers, who are currently working on their fourth album. As a member of LaDaMa — a collaborative project also involving musicians from Colombia, Brazil and Venezuela — she is interested in the intersecting points between music, community and daily living. She’s also working on a solo album with her first love, the classical guitar.
