Three Great Things: Ben Gibbard

Kacey Johansing was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and raised in the mountain towns of Colorado, the daughter of a coal miner and a painter. After leaving Berklee College of Music in Boston, Johansing relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area, where she co-founded the duo Yesway and released two solo albums. Later moving to Los Angeles, Johansing released her third solo album The Hiding in 2017, which received widespread acclaim from critics and listeners alike and garnered comparisons to Fleetwood Mac, Carole King and Prefab Sprout. She subsequently toured internationally and shared the stage with Real Estate and Fruit Bats, and became a frequent touring member of Hand Habits. She is currently preparing for the release of her fourth album on her own Night Bloom Records.

Introducing: Kacey Johansing’s “I Try”

Hannah Georgas began creating the album All That Emotion about a year after the release of her celebrated 2016 album For Evelyn — starting with an intensive process of writing and demoing songs in her Toronto apartment, and finishing with a month long retreat in Los Angeles. She began the record making process in the middle of 2018 when she traveled to Long Pond, the upstate New York studio &amp; home of producer Aaron Dessner of The National.
The writing of the album found Hannah creating her most personal album to date. “All That Emotion’s album cover is an old family photo,” says Hannah. “I love the image because it captures this calm confidence. It looks like people are watching a performance and it seems like he’s diving in without a second thought. Similarly, I find that it parallels the approach needed within art. The calm confidence of expressing yourself without the thought of consequence, regardless of anyone watching.&#8221;
On the album, you’ll hear about bad habits and prayerful families — right and wrong love — mistakes and moving on — casual cruelty and most of all, change. Plotting the boundaries of where to place this music it’s emotionally fraught but warm &amp; fuzzy. “An indie-minded avant-pop artist” was the Boston Globe’s formulation for her charms. Think of Fleetwood Mac meets The National; Kate Bush-sized passion with the earthiness of Cat Power or Aimee Mann. The album grows inside you and sticks to your insides. The songs are big tent anthems, rough at the edges but relatable.

Sun Racket is the newest release by Throwing Muses, the ground-breaking band who broke every rule in the book and effortlessly changed the face of alternative music. The band, consisting of Kristin Hersh, David Narcizo and Bernard Georges, are now signed to the legendary Fire Records, a label that shares Hersh’s fiercely independent ethos. 
Sun Racket, the follow up to 2013’s Purgatory/Paradise, is an outpouring of modal guitars and reverbed shapes set behind Hersh’s well-thumbed notebook of storylines and haunting vocals that get into your psyche.
One of the greatest college bands of the 90’s, Kristin Hersh formed Throwing Muses with high school friends. The band pioneered a new alternative sound, releasing a string of critically celebrated albums and touring the world. Arresting masterpiece University saw the band hitting US and UK charts and marked the beginning of a dedicated fan base that would support them for decades to come.

Puloma has been active in the film &amp; TV industry for over a decade and has worked on many notable TV shows including Flight Of The Conchords and Bored To Death, and on films such as St. Vincent, The Namesake, and Arbitrage. Rob is a filmmaker and Producers Guild of America member based in Los Angeles, CA. Rob directed the documentary features <a href="http://othermusicdocumentary.com/">Other Music</a> (Tribeca Film Festival 2019) and <a href="http://syljohnsonmovie.com/">Syl Johnson: Any Way The Wind Blows</a> (Best Documentary Feature, Sidewalk Film Festival 2016). Sue Tweedy Talks The Tweedy Show, Lounge Ax, and the Stuff in Her House

Dan Deacon’s newest score, for the HBO dog-grooming documentary Well Groomed, follows the release of his fifth studio album Mystic Familiar and is the latest addition to his collaborative repertoire which includes soundtracks for films Rat Film, Time Trial, and Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt, as well as works with the NYCBallet, LAPhil, and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Well Groomed immerses the viewer in the colorful and surreal subculture of competitive creative dog grooming, a world where prizes are awarded transforming dogs into flamboyant living art objects. The lighter tone and largely upbeat subject matter of the documentary offered Deacon an opportunity to compose with more playful tones and organic instrumentation not usually found in his work such as vibraphone, guitar, and piano. From Vangelis-inspired soundscape to Krautrock-influenced anthems, the Well Groomed soundtrack channels the ecstatic energy of Deacon’s legendary live shows more than any of his film work to date.

Malik is a 24-year-old GRAMMY-winning producer and artist who’s been taken under the mentorship of No. I.D. and his label, ARTium Recordings. He’s also a darling of his hometown Austin, TX, a restless creative spirit who’s been writing and creating music locally for some time. The pinnacle of his work so far is Spectrum (Demo). Out now, each song on Spectrum (Demo)  which Malik describes as “a sort of musical take on Pixar’s Inside Out, if it were as heavily influenced by Outkast, Graduation-era Kanye West, Days Before Rodeo-era Travis Scott, Acid Rap Chance the Rapper, and Nostalgia, Ultra Frank Ocean, as I was”  is named after a specific color and channels its energy and purpose.
