French multidisciplinary artist Nina Savary was born into the world of entertainment, taking to performing like a duck out of water, brought up backstage, behind the scenes of theaters across Europe in the &#8217;70s. Making her debut to the stage at the mere age of four years old at la Scala in Milan, touring with her parents&#8217; explosive and free theatre company Grand Magic Circus. Now an adult, Nina is a renowned performer; a singer, dancer and actress, she has been involved in many artistic projects such as musicals, opera as well as collaborating with musicians such as Stereolab’s Laetitia Sadier and Julien Gasc, Eddy Crampes, Marker Starling, and her partner Astrobal, aka Emmanuel Mario, a producer, arranger and composer with whom she formed the band Institut and the project Vivre! in 2020, along with Arnaud Dumatin.

<div>Stemming from various bands that guitarist/vocalist Steven Instasi and bassist Ben Semeta had been in since their teenage years, Black Beach formed in 2012 in their hometown of Middleboro, MA when the two joined with childhood friend and drummer Ryan Nicholson. Originally starting as a hardcore band, the trio decided to focus on writing a style of music that encompassed all of their interests rather than existing in the confines of any one particular genre. What resulted was a sound that took inspiration from noise rock, post-punk, proto-punk, doom, free jazz, and art rock. Eventually relocating to Boston where the band found kindred spirits in the local music scene, Black Beach found a home in the various basements and music venues in the city and began playing with international touring acts such as Thee Oh Sees, Protomartyr, and Acid King. With two EPS, a split with friends Nice Guys and 2016’s LP Shallow Creatures under their belt, Black Beach continues to evolve their genre bending version of rock music. </div>

Julia Shapiro lives in Seattle and performs in the bands Chastity Belt, Childbirth and Who Is She. Chastity Belt put out their third record in June 2017 called I Used To Spend So Much Time Alone on the label Hardly Art. Some of her other interests include watching reality TV, taking long walks, petting dogs, and gossiping.

Chastity Belt’s energy is like a circuit, circling around the silly and the sincere. Tongue-in-cheek shit-shooting and existential rumination feed into each other infinitely.
Theirs is a long-term relationship, and that loop sustains them. That’s a creative thesis in and of itself, but isn’t that also just the mark of a true-blue friendship?
The band talks a lot about intention these days — how to be more present with each other. The four piece — Julia Shapiro (vocals, guitar, drums), Lydia Lund (vocals, guitar), Gretchen Grimm (drums, vocals, guitar) and Annie Truscott (bass) — is nine years deep in this, after all. It seems now, more than ever, that circuit is a movement of intentionality, one that creates a space inside which they can be themselves, among themselves. It’s a space where the euphoria of making music with your best friends is protected from the outside world’s churning expectations. It’s a kind of safe zone for the band to occupy as their best selves: a group of friends who love each other.
Their fourth record, Chastity Belt, comes out of that safe space. With the luxury of spending several weeks in the studio with Jay Som’s Melina Duterte, Chastity Belt was able to experiment. The result is their most sonically developed and nuanced record yet; one that’s not only a product of, but a series of reflections on what it means to take what you need and to understand yourself better.

The composer/electronic musician/healer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith’s new album The Mosaic of Transformation on Ghostly International is the follow up to the critically acclaimed 2017 album The Kid.
For her, expressions found in the physical body&#8217;s relationship to sound and color became the foundational frequency of the new album. A bright, sensorial glide through unbound wave phenomena and the radiant power discovered within oneself, with a distinct healing quality to it that existed long before society’s recent shift. Katilyn continued to explore the endless possibilities of electronic instruments as well as the shapes, movements, and expressions found in the physical body&#8217;s relationship to sound and color. It is this life-guiding interest that forms the foundational frequencies of the new album.  While writing and recording, she embraced a daily practice of physical movement, passing electricity through her body and into motion, in ways reflecting her audio practice, which sends currents through modular synthesizers and into the air through speakers.
Not a dancer by any traditional definition, she taught herself improvisatory movement realizing flexibility, strength, and unexpectedly, what she calls “a visual language” stemming from the human body and comprised of vibrational shapes. Understood as cymatics, as she says, &#8220;as a reference for how frequencies can be visualized,&#8221; much like a mosaic.
