Three Great Things: Life On Planets

Craig Roberts is a British actor, director, writer and producer. His second feature as writer-director, <a href="http://www.samuelgoldwynfilms.com/eternal-beauty/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eternal Beauty </a>starring Sally Hawkins, David Thewlis, Billie Piper, Alice Lowe and Penelope Wilton, is out now on digital and on demand through Samuel Goldwyn Films. Roberts’ directorial debut, Just Jim (2015), starred Emile Hirsh opposite Craig, who also wrote the film. As an actor, Roberts’ breakthrough role was playing the lead in Richard Ayoade’s 2010 coming-of-age drama Submarine, which won him rave reviews and awards such as the London Critics Circle Film Award for Young British Performer of the Year. Roberts starred as the lead in three seasons of the hit Amazon Prime series Red Oaks, produced by Steven Soderbergh and David Gordon Green, and starred in Rob Burnett’s The Fundamentals of Caring, opposite Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez. His other notable screen credits include: The Current War, Neighbors, Richard Ayoade’s The Double, 22 Jump Street and Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre.

Bryan Devendorf, founding member and drummer for The National, recently released a self-titled album under the name Royal Green. Royal Green was co-produced with Nate Martinez and recorded in Brooklyn, NY. The eight-song album features original songs as well as some surprising covers. It includes the single “Breaking The River,” a breezy jam that features additional guitar from The National’s Aaron Dessner, and some groovy bass playing from Bob Weir Campfire Band bandmate, Josh Kaufman.

Kodi Smit-McPhee currently stars in the sci-fi thriller 2067, which is available on digital and on demand through RLJE Films. Born in 1996 in Adelaide, Australia, Smit-McPhee started acting at the age of nine. He dropped out of high school in his first year to pursue acting and currently resides in Los Angeles as does his father Andy McPhee and sister Sianoa Smit-McPhee, who are also actors. Smit-McPhee is known for his roles in The Road, Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, X-Men: Apocalypse, and the lead role in the prehistoric film Alpha. His upcoming revenge Western The Power of Dog will be directed by Jane Campion and costars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons. Smit-McPhee is a master of emotion and is deeply entrenched in philosophy, freemasonry and creative artistic expression.

Paradise Lost is the latest release from Brooklyn-based, Ohio-hailing 30-year-old electronic pop musician John Jagos. A lush journey through oceanic textures and gorgeous, tactile synths, Paradise Lost charts Jagos’ perspective of optimistic existentialism, his lovely cloud of a singing voice hovering over the proceedings and radiating emotional honesty.

Aya Cash currently stars in Josh Ruben’s film Scare Me, which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and is now streaming on Shudder. She can also be seen now in the second season of the Amazon original series The Boys,” and recently appeared as Joan Simon in Fosse/Verdon, the Emmy-nominated FX limited series starring Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams. Her additional TV credits include the critically acclaimed FX comedy series You’re the Worst, for which she was nominated for the Critics&#8217; Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series and the TCA Award for Individual Achievement in Comedy, and Joe Swanberg’s Netflix anthology series Easy. She has also been seen in films such as The Wolf of Wall Street, Sleepwalk with Me, The Oranges and Game Over, Man! She splits her time between New York and Los Angeles.

Lunchbox’s Tim Brown and Donna McKean have been making records in their Oakland, California basement for two decades, inspired by 1960s/70s AM-radio pop and TV show theme music, punk, C86, and mod à la The Creation and The Jam. From the sonically-inventive indiepop of The Magic of Sound (1999) to the dub-influenced psychedelia of Evolver (2001) to the critically-acclaimed bubblegum of Lunchbox Loves You (2013), the couple have established a sound all their own. Their new album for Slumberland, After School Special, finds them at the height of their powers of songcraft and performance.

Alejandro Aranda’s influences and eclectic musical palette includes everything from Frank Zappa to The Deftones, and Nick Cave to classical masters such as Chopin. Aranda is self-taught guitar and piano player, developing his unforgettably distinct style over the past few years.  As he expanded his guitar skills, Aranda taught himself music production and began exploring his vocal talents. By the time he was 22, Aranda had begun busking all around LA County and playing backyard parties where the name Scarypoolparty emerged. His latest album, Doom Hologram, came out in September of 2020.

Antonio Campos’ fourth feature, The Devil All the Time, is now on Netflix. An epic midwestern Gothic drama based on the novel of the same name by Donald Ray Pollock, it features an all-star cast of Tom Holland, Bill Skarsgård, Robert Pattinson, Riley Keough, Jason Clarke, Sebastian Stan, Haley Bennett, Mia Wasikowska and Harry Melling. Campos made his directorial feature debut with the Independent Spirit Award–nominated Afterschool, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008, and followed it up with Simon Killer (2012), starring Brady Corbet, and the biopic Christine, starring Rebecca Hall, in 2016. Louise Goffin is a songwriter, musician, and producer with a rich, multi-decade career, spanning 10 solo albums as both a major-label act and her current status as an independent, business-savvy creator both on and off stage. Goffin became a dedicated musician at an early age, opening for Jackson Browne at the world-famous Troubadour when she was 17 and releasing her debut, Kid Blue, as a teenager. She has since performed with some of music’s biggest names; a personal highlight was playing lead guitar and singing harmony on tour with Tears For Fears. She also is a trained producer — recently a graduate of a six-month course at Nashville’s Blackbird Academy — who produced Carole King’s GRAMMY-nominated LP, A Holiday Carole. A natural historian who remains dedicated to exploring, preserving, and demystifying iconic songs, Goffin is behind the newSong Chronicles podcast, the successor to the acclaimed podcast she co-hosted with Paul Zollo, The Great Song Adventure. As the creative director of The Goffin &amp; King Foundation, Goffin also works to preserve the legacy of her parents, Carole King and Gerry Goffin, through providing educational opportunities for songwriters, performers, and musicians. Goffin’s latest release, 2020’s Two Different Movies, is a cinematic record that finds its creator nodding to multiple influences: classic pop, rootsy rock ‘n’ roll, jazzy piano ballads, strutting glam, and the California folk-pop that&#8217;s emanated from her Laurel Canyon stomping grounds for decades. The album cover is special, too: it is a hand-drawn portrait of Goffin by Joni Mitchell, which connects her inspired present with her equally inspiring past.

Three Great Things: Louise Goffin

With Fish Pond Fish, Darlingside — Dave Senft (bass), Don Mitchell (guitar, banjo), Auyon Mukharji (violin, mandolin), and Harris Paseltiner (cello, guitar) — has created a natural history in song, taking us into gardens, almond groves, orchard rows, down to the ocean floor and under stars. The band has long been praised for their harmonies and intelligent songwriting, described by NPR as “exquisitely-arranged, literary-minded, baroque folk-pop,” and their dynamic presence (crowded tightly together onstage) has made them a live-performance favorite.

Three Great Things: Auyon Mukharji of Darlingside

The Room, the debut album from Grammy-winning multiplatinum producer and songwriter Ricky Reed, was just released via Reed’s own Nice Life Recording Company. Best known for his work with Lizzo, Maggie Rogers, Twenty One Pilots, Halsey, Leon Bridges and many others, The Room marks Reed’s first official full-length following the release of three solo singles from 2016-2017. The album features collaborations from Leon Bridges, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Lido Pimienta, Duendita, Kiana Ledé and John-Robert among others.
