The Timbaland Masterclass and Me

Hayden Thorpe released five albums with his former band, the beloved British art rock act Wild Beasts, over the course of the last decade. After their final full-length LP, Boy King, in 2016, Hayden took some time off to travel the world, without the rigors of touring to contend with. Refreshed and inspired, he returned to the piano in 2018, to write his debut solo album, Diviner, which arrived on May 24 2019 via Domino.

Jordan Chung grew up between Westmoreland and Kingston, Jamaica&#8217;s capital city and musical epicenter. This duality between country and city living gave him a unique perspective, which he would filter through the music that surrounded him. Since he was just seven years old, Chung was never caught without a walkman, and this early musical education gave him a massive head start. At high school, Chung formed a group, symbolic of a collision of musical minds called Kullijhan. Not long after, he set up a makeshift studio in the back of his childhood home and released his first piece of commercial music; he was only 16 years old.
While he was still in high school, Chung began communicating online with Gavin Blair, who was producing under the Equiknoxx moniker. And when he finished school and moved to Kingston full-time, Chung began working with Blair and local MC Kemikal, producing as Equiknoxx Music and assembling a discography of dancehall mutations. The fruits of the group&#8217;s labors led to the acclaimed compilation album Bird Sound Power, released in 2016, which took Equiknoxx Music across the world, scooping up accolades from international press on the way. This album was followed by Colón Man, the group&#8217;s first proper album and another acclaimed hit for the band. Alongside producing music, Chung also takes professional photographs and has developed his voice commenting and criticizing music from across the cultural map, from reggae and dancehall through to experimental techno.

Internationally beloved singer-songwriter/producer/electronic musician Azam Ali’s award-winning career has been defined by boldly defying genres and commercial expectations to heed her creative instincts. In keeping with this fearless spirit, her latest opus Phantoms, is a masterstroke of artistic wholeness and focus. The darkly alluring record is Azam’s first self-produced entirely English language album that melds Azam’s other-worldly, cinematic musicality with gorgeously heartbreaking gloomy electro-pop, adding a whole new dimension to an unconventional artist who has always eluded categorization.
Responsible for every facet of Phantoms from songwriting, singing, programming, to production, Azam Ali pushes through the glass ceiling and enters the largely male dominated tech world to join in the ranks of other visionary female electronic musicians and producers who are shifting and shaping the landscape of electronic music.

The Transcendent Satisfaction of Playing with Other People

Fury is a hardcore band from Orange County, California consisting of singer Jeremy Stith, lead guitarist Madison Woodward, rhythm guitarist Alfredo Guiterrez, bassist Daniel Samayoa, and drummer Alex Samayoa. Forming in 2014, they established themselves quickly, releasing both a demo on Washington, DC’s Mosher Delight Records and the Kingdom Come EP on Boston’s Triple B Records in the same calendar year. They built on the melodic legacy of Orange County by way of heavy, rhythmic, start-stop guitars and Stith’s wordy and referential lyrics. Then, in 2016, came their debut LP on Triple B Records, Paramount, which was met with respect from the hardcore community and praise from outsider critics.
Now, Fury releases Failed Entertainment, their sophomore LP and debut with Boston-based Run For Cover Records. As with their previous records, “Failed Entertainment” was recorded by Colin Knight and their own guitarist Madison Woodward at Paradise Records, in Anaheim. This time, though, the band also sought new surroundings and outside expertise, collaborating with engineer Andrew Oswald at Secret Bathroom Studios, as well as mixing engineer Jack Endino (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Seaweed).

Michael Venutolo-Mantovani is a writer, musician, and record label owner living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. His writing has appeared in the New York Times, Southern Living, Catapult, and on bandcamp.com, amongst others. He&#8217;s released records under the name Michael VM and with his longtime band, The Everymen. A veteran of the record industry, Michael spent many years working at The Beggars Group and Matador Records, and recently started his own label, Suah Sounds, with his father Ray. An expatriated New Yorker, he misses the city almost every day. But not in the summer.
