Introducing: Slothrust and Sons of an Illustrious Father Cover Each Other

Oh, Rose, based in Olympia, Washington, is fronted by Olivia Rose. Formed in 2014, the band built its foundations by playing DIY house shows and contributing to Olympia’s long-standing punk and art scene. A play on Rose’s own name, Oh, Rose recorded and self-released their first EP, That Do Now See in 2014 followed by a mini album the following year titled Seven. Sticking with the tradition of their previous release, their new album While My Father Sleeps was recorded and mixed by band member Kevin Christopher in Olympia. Today, the live lineup includes Rose on vocals and guitar, Liam Hindahl on drums, Sarah Redden on synthesizer, and Christopher on bass.
While My Father Sleeps is set for release August 23 via Park The Van Records.

Introducing: The Rocket Summer’s “Morning Light”

Ceschi’s music lives in some liminal space between left-field hip hop, folk punk, and indie rock. It’s hard to explain, so on planes he generally tells people that he sounds “something like Ed Sheeran,” and they nod. He has worked with Saskatchewan, Canadian producer Factor Chandelier for over a decade as they formed the backbone of their Fake Four Inc. record label. Their 2015 record, Broken Bone Ballads built a cult following within the indie rap and DIY punk communities. 2019’s Sad, Fat Luck is part eulogy to many lost friends, part breakup album, part US-born-Latino analysis of Trump’s America, and part ode to aging. Features guest vocals from Sammus &amp; Astronautalis.

Introducing: Ceschi’s “Middle Earth”

As a songwriter and producer, Johanne Swanson — who performs as Yohuna — maintains a masterful ability to distill chaos into calm; to contemplate the more challenging and messy matters of heart and mind with a self-assured deadpan stare and pointed stillness. Whereas her previous work centered layers of synthesizer, Mirroring was written entirely on guitar, giving her new songs a sense of catharsis and physicality. And while her debut, 2016&#8217;s Patientness, was a culmination of several formative years spent in flux, a document of coming and going, Mirroring is different: it has a set place and a time. Swanson wrote these intimate songs quickly in one purge in her bedroom in Brooklyn. When her roommate, Eric Littmann (Julie Byrne, Vagabon, Phantom Posse) heard her writing and recording them from the other side of his bedroom wall, he approached her to collaborate. Littmann ultimately co-produced, engineered, and mixed the record, alongside contributions from Adelyn Strei (guitar, flute), Warren Hildebrand (guitar) and many more friends. The results are some of Swanson&#8217;s most sweeping arrangements to date, with cello riffs that sing like a grounding human voice, harp and trombone, drums that push her loudest hooks yet forward.

Mega Ran and MC Lars both host respective podcasts, Mega Ran is a 2019 Guinness World Record holder, and has found success playing huge festivals, conventions, professional wrestling events and has toured the world alongside Lars, across the UK, Europe and Japan (where Mega Ran has built a dedicated following in the “chip-hop” community, merging 8-bit beats with unparalleled lyricism). MC Lars has hosted two TEDx Talks, premiered a song at Carnegie Hall, survived three complete Warped Tours, opened for Snoop Dogg, and collaborated with “Weird Al” Yankovic and KRS-One.

Communipaw is a psychedelic folk-rock band that spends its time between Brooklyn, NY and Oakland, CA. In February 2019, they released an EP entitled Power Plant that affirms their enduring interest in mysticism, memory, and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. The band features Brian Bond on vocals and guitar, Keith Carne on drums, Justin ‘Bestamo’ Gaynor on guitar and pedal steel, and a rotating crew of collaborators on everything else.

One would be hard-pressed to think of a more quintessential go-to artisan for dynamic and progressive new music than Lisa Papineau. She began her performance career in experimental theatre and has since amassed a body of work that spans albums, film soundtracks, art installations, dance and theater productions, narration and producing, but is best known for her own mold-breaking voice. Papineau can possess an unmistakably hushed yet still-beating heart-in-hand vocal style or tear screams from the same breath. She fronts her eponymous group and the band Big Sir with bassist Juan Alderete.
