Charlie Looker Revisits Extra Life’s Made Flesh with Sam Goblin

Toronto&#8217;s Bernice have always been subject to their own distinct rhythms. Releasing their first album in 2011 then waiting seven years for the release of their sophomore LP, and another four until the release of their 2021 album Eau De Bonjourno, each release from the Robin Dann-led band feels like a missive from another world, and one that arrives precisely when it was supposed to, independent of any external pressures or expectations. Despite their periodic disappearances, Bernice&#8217;s albums have reliably provoked waves of startled excitement from both the press and their fellow musicians, with high praise coming from outlets like Pitchfork, NPR, Stereogum and the New York Times, and legendary artists like Beverly Glenn-Copeland, who described himself as &#8220;a down on my knees fan&#8221; of the band, saying &#8220;the vision is extraordinary and it&#8217;s musically so exciting.&#8221;

Formed nearly two decades earlier while in high school, Ohtis entered a 15-year hiatus as a result of lead vocalist Sam Swinson’s addiction issues before reforming to make the record following his sobriety.  A deeply personal and honest record, Curve of Earth presented an autobiographical journey through Sam’s recovery as well the demons of his religious upbringing. The band just released a duet with Stef Chura called “Schatze.”

Canadian art-rock band Blessed have released just one full-length record—their taut, spring-loaded 2019 debut Salt—and a handful of EPs (iii is the brand new one) and yet they’ve arranged themselves around a sound and aesthetic that is fully formed and potent, couched in a quiet reverence for their community in Abbotsford, a small, rural city in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley. In line with the themes of collaboration and community that define the band, they also recruited different mixers for each song of the iii EP, including Corin Roddick (Purity Ring), John McEntire (Tortoise), Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck), and the band’s own Drew Riekman.

Geneva Jacuzzi is a pop artist working in the strange paradise of angels — Los Angeles. A mother of invention, she is exalted as an early pioneer of the modern lo-fi bedroom pop terrain, and is a notable figure in the underground scenes in Hollywood and Los Angeles, with her influence spreading worldwide in the pop, noise, and independent art communities. Geneva is further recognized for her work in visual and performance art, fabrication, fashion, and film. She directs and produces music videos and video art installations, designs and produces her own sets and wardrobe, and choreographs her stage performances.
Her latest album, Triple Fire, is out now on Dais Records.

Porridge Radio originated from Dana Margolin’s bedroom, where she first started making music. Living in the seaside town of Brighton, she recorded songs and played them at open mic nights to rooms of old men staring quietly, as she screamed in their faces. Their second album (and Secretly Canadian debut) Every Bad glistens with grand, sweeping ambition. 80s-esque synths shine against Margolin’s urgent vocals – with all the rawness of early Karen O, and influences as disparate as Charli XCX and The Cranberries. Oscillating between desperation, resignation, and, crucially, hope, Porridge Radio’s unmistakable take on pop music is like a jewelry box twinkle just out of kilter.

Ani Ivory-Block, Lily Konigsberg, and Nina Ryser met while attending Bard College and formed Palberta in 2013. My Pal Berta (2013) and Shitheads in the Ditch (2014) were both released by Feeding Tube Records. Bye Bye Berta (2016) was their first album for Wharf Cat Records and it was followed by 2018’s Roach Goin’ Down, both recorded by Paco Cathcart (The Cradle). These albums were surrounded by a slew of EPs and split releases as well as frequent touring of the United States and Canada. Palberta opened for Bikini Kill at Brooklyn Steel in 2019 and were set to tour the UK and Europe for the first time in April of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Their fifth album, Palberta5000, was preceded by the stand-alone single “Something in the Way” and will be released on January 22, 2021. When they can safely do so, they look forward to touring the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe.
