“You Have So Much Ahead”: A Few Words About Aki Kaurismäki

James Roday is a actor-writer-director best known for his eight-year run as Shawn Spencer on the USA hit comedy Psych, which also spawned a Psych film that aired in December 2017 to huge ratings success. Roday, who is currently starring on ABC&#8217;s A Million Little Things, has written pilots for USA, Fox and SyFy, and has directed shows such as Fox&#8217;s The Resident and Rosewood, and CBS&#8217;s Battle Creek, as well as writing and directing multiple episodes of Psych for USA. His feature directing debut, Gravy, starring Jimmi Simpson and Michael Weston, is now a cult classic horror-comedy film seen around the world. Roday&#8217;s second feature, Treehouse, is now on Hulu as part of Blumhouse Productions&#8217; anthology series Into the Dark.

Karen Gillan is a Scottish actor, writer and director best known for her roles as Amy Pond in Doctor Who and Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Infinity War and the forthcoming Avengers: Endgame. She also plays Martha in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and its as-yet-untitled sequel. She has written and directed a number of shorts, and made her feature debut with the 2018 film The Party&#8217;s Just Beginning, in which she also played the lead role.

Born in 1950 in Sligo, Ireland, Neil Jordan began his career as a writer. His first book of stories, Night In Tunisia (1976), won the Guardian Fiction prize. Since then he has published seven novels, The Past (1979), The Dream of a Beast (1983), Sunrise With Seamonster (1994), Shade (2005), Mistaken (2011), The Drowned Detective (2015), and Carnivalesque (2017). In 1982, Jordan wrote and directed his first feature film, Angel, and has written, directed, and produced more than 15 films, including Company of Wolves, Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, Interview With the Vampire, Michael Collins, The Butcher Boy, The End Of The Affair, In Dreams, Breakfast on Pluto, Ondine, and Byzantium. His latest film, <a href="http://focusfeatures.com/greta/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Greta</a><a href="http://focusfeatures.com/greta/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"></a>, starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Isabelle Huppert, is in theaters through Focus Features from March 1. Neil Jordan has also written, directed, and produced three seasons of the television series The Borgias, with producer James Flynn and Showtime. His films have been honored with numerous awards worldwide, including an Oscar (Best Original Screenplay), BAFTA’s, Golden Globes, a Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival, and a Silver Bear from Berlin.

Celebrated director Mandie Fletcher&#8216;s new film, Patrick, a canine comedy starring Beattie Edmondson and Ed Skrein, is in select theaters and on VOD from February 14 through Screen Media. Most recently, she directed Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley in Absolutely Fabulous – The Movie, and her previous films are Deadly Advice, Born Kicking and Shalom Joan Collins. Mandie is the winner of two ACE awards as Best Comedy Director for Blackadder and The Fainthearted Feminist. She also directed the BAFTA-nominated series Only Fools and Horses, Hamish Macbeth and Blackadder II. She was named Director of the Year 2011 by Women in TV and Film and her other television work includes Miranda and Absolutely Fabulous. She is currently attached as writer-director on Pants on Fire, a romantic comedy for Irregular Features Ltd, and as director on Torrential Sunshine for Gilliesworks/Piccadilly Pictures.

Catherine Hardwicke is best known as the director of Twilight, which launched the worldwide blockbuster franchise, The Twilight Saga. She also directed Miss You Already, Red Riding Hood, Lords of Dogtown, Miss Bala, and the critically acclaimed Thirteen, which won numerous international awards. Hardwicke has also ventured into television, directing episodes of This is Us, Hell on Wheels, Low Winter Sun and the pilots of Reckless and EyeWitness, and her latest show, Don&#8217;t Look Deeper, a new series for Quibi, is forthcoming later this year. Jon Kauffman&#8216;s feature-film debut, the prison-set romantic thriller <a href="http://www.heartlockthemovie.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Heartlock</a>, opens in select theaters on January 25, 2019. Kauffman is an award-winning filmmaker whose short films have played at film festivals throughout the United States, including at the Tribeca Film Festival. Jon is currently writing his follow-up feature-film, while also developing The Nation, a one-hour dramatic TV series. Jon received his M.F.A. from Columbia University’s Graduate Film Program and received an A.B. with honors from Occidental College in Los Angeles. In addition, Jon apprenticed with, and assisted, Darren Aronofsky for two years, working alongside him on The Wrestler and Black Swan.

She is a founding member of IAMA Theatre Company, performing in the world premieres of Leslye Headland’s Bachelorette, Reverb and Cult of Love. Her directorial debut, Peen, was a Vimeo Staff Pick, and she writes and directs the short series <a href="http://www.findingtheasshole.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Finding the Asshole</a>, which was chosen to show at Slamdance 2019 in the Episodes program. Empire recently described Simon Rumley as “one of the most important and intelligent British film-makers working today.” Screen International said of his critically acclaimed 2017 feature, Crowhurst, which was executive produced by British legend Nicolas Roeg, “It reaffirms Rumley&#8217;s position among the most interesting, unconventional British filmmakers of the moment.” Rumley has directed nine feature films, including Red White &amp; Blue, Fashionista and The Living and the Dead, and contributed to the anthology film The ABCs of Death. His films have played at festivals around the world including Toronto, Rotterdam, SXSW, Sarajevo, Tallin, Transylvania, Buenos Aires, Sydney, London, Rio and Stockholm, and won almost 50 awards collectively, including best film or director prizes at Sitges, Fantastic Fest, Fantasia and Fantaspoa, amongst others. Everyone Sees Different Things: Remembering Nicolas Roeg

Writer-director Katherine Dieckmann’s latest film, Strange Weather, starring Holly Hunter, is available on digital and through Netflix. Her previous features are A Good Baby (2000), Diggers (2006), and Motherhood (2009). Dieckmann was the original director on Nickelodeon’s groundbreaking series The Adventures of Pete &amp; Pete, and has directed music videos for Sharon Van Etten, R.E.M., Wilco, Aimee Mann, Throwing Muses and Vic Chesnutt, among other bands. She is a Professor of Professional Practice at Columbia University’s School of the Arts Film Program, where she teaches screenwriting.

Blurring the Edges: Sharon Van Etten’s “Jupiter 4”

Angela Shelton is the writer-director of <a href="https://heartbabythemovie.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Heart, Baby</a>, based on the true story of boxer George Lee Martin, starring Gbenga Akinnagbe and Jackson Rathbone; the film is now playing in select theaters. Shelton had her first screenwriting and producing credit with Tumbleweeds (1999), which won the Sundance Film Festival Filmmaker’s Trophy and earned the lead actress Janet McTeer an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win. She followed Tumbleweeds with her highly acclaimed adaptation of Kaye Gibbons’ novel Charms For The Easy Life (2002), starring Mimi Rogers and Gena Rowlands. In 2001 Angela made her directorial debut with the documentary Searching For Angela Shelton, in which she discovered that 70% of the women she interviewed with the same name had, like herself, been a victim of rape, childhood sexual abuse and/or domestic violence. The film received many accolades and went on to begin a grassroots movement of survivors and humanitarian organizations around the world dedicated to exposing the epidemic of abuse. Her memoir, Finding Angela Shelton, published by Meredith Publishing in 2006, describes how making the documentary changed her life. She is currently in development on her second feature.
