Sarah Shook and Mariel Buckley Just Want People to Have More Experiences

Blissfulness is at the core of Wiseacre, the strikingly purifying sophomore record from Eric Slick. Wiseacre is a location, literally. It’s the place he married the light in his life, Natalie Prass, and titling the record after it is an attempt at bottling the euphoria of his wedding day. The record isn’t just about the joy that comes from a loving existence blossoming out of a new relationship, it’s also about the hard work that it takes to get to that place. The majority of his time has been behind a drum set, spending the last decade rounding out the industrious outfit Dr. Dog, and as of late, touring as a newlywed alongside his wife.

It was 2006, and Kings of Spade moved from Honolulu to Los Angeles to chase their dreams. But the jungle, as we’ve learned, isn’t always so welcoming. Singer KC and drummer Matt Kato were barely scraping by. A majority of the feisty anthems on the group’s new full-length, Kings of Spade (on Soundly Music), comes from simply not letting tough times kick them down. Produced by Grammy-winner Dave Cobb (Judah and the Lion, Chris Stapleton), their output (guitarist Jesse Savio and bassist Tim Corker rounds out the band) is at turns soulful and rollicking—never complacent, never dull, always sincere. They recorded Kings of Spade over two weeks in Nashville with Cobb.

Lola Kirke is no stranger to shape-shifting—as an actress with a steadily ascending star, she’s had major roles in David Fincher’s Gone Girl and Noah Baumbach’s Mistress America, as well as the Golden Globe-winning Amazon show Mozart in the Jungle. While less in the fore, her passion for music has stayed constant, with her guitar following her from dressing room to dressing room.
Born to a musical family, Lola embarked on her own musical journey with her four-track EP released in 2016. Tracked live to tape in East Los Angeles and produced by frequent collaborator Wyndham Garnett (Elvis Perkins in Dearland, WYNDHAM) her debut LP Heart Head West, asserts her as part of the artistic tradition she holds so dear: delivering her own heart, laid bare for someone else to hear as theirs.

He contributes to the New York Times&#8216; songwriter&#8217;s blog Measure for Measure, and has written pieces in several books on music.  Peter is a charter member of Radio Free Song Club, a magnificent new songwriters&#8217; collective. He considers himself among the luckiest people on earth.
