The 2023 Talkies: Talkhouse Film Contributors’ Top Films of the Year

Cassius Michael Kim’s new documentary about 1MDB and Jho Low, Man on the Run, is now streaming on Netflix. Kim is a director, producer, and writer who helped create the CNN Original Series, The Wonder List with Bill Weir, directing and producing half of the show’s twenty documentary hours from locations as diverse as Vanuatu, Madagascar, and Egypt. Prior to joining CNN, Cassius worked at ABC News. He began his career at the independent film production company This is That. Most recently, Kim produced and filmed Stockton On My Mind, about Mayor Michael Tubbs Jr. and the city of Stockton, CA, which was nominated in the category of Outstanding Current Affairs Documentary for the 2021 News &amp; Documentary Emmy® Awards.

The Root of All Evil

Award-winning actor Daniel Brühl, who currently stars in the new sports thriller <a href="https://www.lionsgate.com/movies/race-for-glory-audi-vs-lancia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia</a>, broke through as a performer with his role in the German film Good Bye, Lenin! Quentin Tarantino brought him to Hollywood for Inglourious Basterds and he played Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda in Ron Howard&#8217;s Rush, which earned him a nomination at the Golden Globe Awards 2014. He has also starred in films such as The Fifth Estate and Captain America: Civil War, and in 2019 he produced and starred in Julie Delpy’s My Zoe. In 2018, he starred in the title role of the series The Alienist, based on the international best-selling novel by Caleb Carr, for which he was nominated as Best Actor at the Golden Globe Awards 2019, and resumed his role as Zemo in Marvel&#8217;s 2021 series The Falcon &amp; the Winter Soldier. With his production company, Amusement Park, he produced All Quiet on the Western Front, inspired by the best-selling novel by Erich Maria Remarque. In 2022, he made his directorial debut with Next Door from a script by best-selling author Daniel Kehlmann based on an idea of Brühl; he also starred in the movie and produced it through Amusement Park.

Tom Gilroy has written and directed three award-winning films, the critically-acclaimed features Spring Forward and The Cold Lands, and the short Touch Base, as well as the shorts <a href="https://vimeo.com/424310345" target="_blank" rel="noopener">#WaynesvilleStrong</a>, Mr Sycamore, and his collaboration with R.E.M., It Happened Today. With his theatre company, Machine Full, Gilroy mounted over a dozen critically acclaimed productions of his own plays as well as the multimedia production of Hamlet. His new project is Our Lady of the Snow, with Isabella Rosselini, Grace Zabriskie, Jared Harris, Ian Hart, and Lili Taylor.

In addition to her directorial work, last year, Jennifer launched the book club, &lt;, via her production company, ,&lt; to spotlight previously unheard voices, authors with diverse backgrounds and generally writers who would not otherwise have the opportunity to be highlighted this way.

Jason Isaacs, who is currently playing Cary Grant in the BritBox series Archie, has won or been nominated for many awards including a Golden Globe, BAFTA, International Emmy, Critics&#8217; Circle, Satellite, SAG and Critics&#8217; Choice Awards amongst others. His extensive film credits include the Harry Potter film series, playing Lucius Malfoy; Armando lanucci&#8217;s The Death Of Stalin, The Patriot, Black Hawk Down, Fury, Green Zone, Event Horizon, Armageddon, The End of the Affair and Friends with Money. He also starred in Fran Kranz&#8217;s Mass opposite Ann Dowd, Martha Plimpton and Reed Birney, with the film and Jason receiving multiple awards and nominations, including winning the Robert Altman Award at the 2022 Spirit Awards. Anna&#8217;s debut feature film, <a href="https://www.hulu.com/movie/appendage-5dee6ffc-dfb6-425e-b3b2-d665241e99b4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Appendage</a>, had its World Premiere at SXSW 2023 and is now streaming on Hulu. Brian Helgeland won the Academy Award for his screenwriting of L.A. Confidential. He was also nominated by the Academy for his writing of Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River. His directorial work includes the films Legend, starring Tom Hardy and Taron Egerton, 42, starring Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford, and A Knight’s Tale, starring Heath Ledger and Paul Bettany. He is the writer of Tony Scott’s Man on Fire and Paul Greengrass’ Green Zone. Helgeland is also the recipient of the Writers Guild of America Award, the PEN Center Literary Award, the Edgar Alan Poe Award, the USC Scripter Award and the Sidney Lumet Award for Integrity in Entertainment. Savannah Knoop is a New York City-based filmmaker, artist, and writer whose work travels between fiction and documentary, lived experience and imagined fantasy. They have performed and exhibited at venues such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum and Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. They adapted their memoir Girl Boy Girl: How I Became JT Leroy (published with Seven Stories Press) into a feature-length film, co-written and directed by Justin Kelly, and starring Kristen Stewart, Laura Dern, Kelvin Harris Jr., Jim Sturgess, and Diane Kruger. J.T. Leroy was released in theaters in April 2019 by Universal Pictures Content Group, is currently available On Demand and Digital and will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on June 4th.

Talia Ryder is currently starring opposite Jacob Elordi, Ayo Adebiri, Simon Rex and Jeremy O. Harris in Sean Price Williams’s directorial debut, The Sweet East, which premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight. One of Sundance 2020’s break-out stars, she was nominated for an Indie Spirit Award and a Critics’ Choice Award as the co-lead of Eliza Hittman’s critically acclaimed Never Rarely Sometimes Always. She was recently seen in Dumb Money, opposite Seth Rogen, Paul Dano, Sebastian Stan and Shailene Woodley. Her other film credits include Do Revenge with Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes, Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated West Side Story, and Mariama Diallo’s thriller Master, opposite Regina Hall, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2022.

Chase Joliet is an actor and filmmaker from Dallas, Texas, whose debut feature as writer-director, Grapefruit, in which he stars opposite Rosanna Arquette and Steph Barkley, is now on the festival circuit. He worked with legendary director Terrence Malick for a number of years on To the Wonder, Voyage of Time and Song to Song, after which he produced his first independent feature film, Krisha, which won SXSW Grand Jury award and audience award before playing at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016. Chase won the John Cassavetes Award at the 2016 Indie Spirit awards and went on to help develop Trey Edward Shults’ second feature, It Comes at Night. Chase’s short film directorial debut, the comedic short Everything Mattress, won multiple audience awards and is currently being sold in European Territories.
