Isabelle Huppert is currently starring in the title role of <a href="https://kinolorber.com/film/la-syndicaliste" target="_blank" rel="noopener">La Syndicaliste</a>, the real-life drama about whistleblower Maureen Kearney. One of the world&#8217;s most prominent actresses, Huppert is acclaimed for her incredible versatility, playing roles ranging from the sexually repressed title character in Michael Haneke&#8217;s The Piano Teacher to the sharp-tongued spinster in François Ozon&#8217;s 8 Women. Celebrated for her many collaborations with director Claude Chabrol, she has won Best Actress twice each at the European Film Awards, Cannes and Venice. She won the Best Actress César for La Cérémonie, having been nominated at the awards a record 14 times.

Paris Zarcilla is a British Filipino BIFA-nominated film and television director-writer who aims to create meaningful, profound and genre-bending stories. His debut feature, Raging Grace, won the Narrative Feature Jury Award and Thunderbird Rising Award for Best Debut at SXSW 2023. His award-winning short film Pommel has screened all over the world at leading festivals. In 2020, Paris wrote and directed the primetime TV drama The Century Egg (Starhub) produced by the Emmy-nominated studio Refinery Media. Zarcilla currently resides in London.

A Place Beyond Rage

Lila Schmitz’s first feature, The Job of Songs, an Irish music documentary that she directed, produced and edited, premiered at DOC NYC in 2021 and is now out on digital. It premiered internationally at the Galway Film Fleadh 2022, winning Best International Documentary. Her short films (both documentary and fiction) have aired on Rocky Mountain PBS, played LGBTQ+ festivals all over the United States, and premiered internationally at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. She spent time producing in the documentary world (for PBS, CBS, Richard Linklater, Bill Guttentag) and worked at Anonymous Content for a year, learning about development and the business side of Hollywood. She currently works for Dropout TV, a media company that makes unscripted comedy, and can often be found trying (and failing) to learn an instrument.

Don Mischer is a renowned producer whose visionary work has left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment with a career spanning six decades. As a producer/director, Mischer’s credits include: the Oscars; the Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial; the Kennedy Center Honors, the 100th anniversary of Carnegie Hall; Motown 25; the Super Bowl Halftime Shows (Michael Jackson, Prince, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen); the Democratic National Convention; Opening Ceremonies of both the 1996 Summer Olympics and 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Mischer has been honored with 15 Emmy Awards, a record 10 Directors Guild of America Awards for Outstanding Directorial Achievement, two NAACP Image Awards, a Peabody Award for excellence in broadcasting, the 2012 Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television from the Producers Guild of America and the 2019 Directors Guild of America Lifetime Achievement Award, only the fourth person ever to receive this honor for their work in television.

Emily Kai Bock is a Canadian filmmaker based in Los Angeles. She has written, directed and edited music videos for bands such as Arcade Fire, Grimes, Solange, Lorde and Grizzly Bear. Her video for Arcade Fire’s single “Afterlife” won the Prism Prize for Best Canadian Music Video and a UKMVA for Best International Alternative video. Her short documentary Spit Gold Under an Empire screened at Sundance 2013 and on Sundance TV. In 2017, her short film, A Funeral for Lightning, premiered at Toronto International Film Festival, where it was selected by TIFF as one of Canada’s Top 10 Short Films of the year. It went on to win the Grand Jury Award for Best Narrative Short Film at the LA Film Festival. She is currently completing another narrative short film and prepping her debut feature film.t

Andrew Davis’ 1978 debut feature, <a href="https://www.andrewdavisfilms.com/stony-island" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Stony Island</a>, a drama about a group of aspiring Chicago musicians trying to make it in the world of popular music, is out in a 45th anniversary restoration on VOD and digital on November 17. Davis is an acclaimed director best known for his action thrillers, such as the classic Oscar-nominated hit The Fugitive, the Steven Seagal movies Above the Law and Under Siege, the Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle Collateral Damage, the Michael Douglas-Gwyneth Paltrow film A Perfect Murder, and Chain Reaction, starring Keanu Reeves and Morgan Freeman. In 2003, he directed the children’s classic Holes, based on Louis Sachar’s novel, starring Shia LaBeouf, Sigourney Weaver, Jon Voight and Patricia Arquette. Presently, Davis is developing several projects through his Santa Barbara based production company, Chicago Pacific Entertainment, and with novelist Jeff Biggers, recently completed his first novel, Disturbing the Bones, a geopolitical thriller set for release in early 2024 by Melville House.

Judy Irving is a Sundance- and Emmy award-winning filmmaker of <a href="https://www.pelicanmedia.org/wild-parrots" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill</a>, a feature documentary about the relationship between a homeless street musician and a flock of wild parrots in San Francisco which is now being re-released in a restored version for its 20th anniversary. Her other work includes Dark Circle, a personal film about the impact of the nuclear industry on residents of Colorado, California, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki; Pelican Dreams, about Brown Pelicans and those who know and love them; and Cold Refuge, which premiered in 2023, about how swimming in San Francisco Bay mitigates life’s major challenges. In 2015, Judy was elected to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Documentary Branch. She lives on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco with her husband, Mark Bittner, and two rescue parrots from the wild flock.

No Money, But Lots of Time

L. Frances Henderson’s feature documentary <a href="https://thismuchweknow.oscilloscope.net/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">This Much We Know</a>, which focuses both on the shocking death of a local teenager who leaped from the roof of Las Vegas’ tallest casino and the city attempts to bury decades of nuclear excess in a nearby mountain, is out now through Oscilloscope. She was named one of Filmmaker magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film” after finishing her documentary Lessons for the Living, about sitting bedside with the dying. She has edited a number of documentary features, including the ITVS-supported documentary film For Ahkeem, which had its world premiere at the 2017 Berlinale and U.S. premiere at Tribeca Film Festival. She has been a member of the Brooklyn Filmmakers Collective for more than 10 years.

What Happened Inside the Oculus

Fernanda Faya’s latest film, the feature documentary Neirud, plays at <a href="https://www.docnyc.net/film/neirud/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DOC NYC</a> on November 11. She is a filmmaker, cinematographer, and educator born and raised in Sao Paulo, and based in Queens, New York. She is currently finishing the short doc Alone Together and developing her first fiction film, Bete, recipient of Spcine Development Fund. Fernanda is a member of the Brazilian Collective of Female Cinematographers (DAFB); Her first film, One for the Road, had its premiere at DOC NYC Film Festival and screened in festivals worldwide.
