Kate Teague claims she’s not a poet. “I’m just trying to be as real as possible,” Teague says from Oxford, Mississippi. When you’re making a name for yourself writing and performing songs in William Faulkner’s hometown, it may be a healthy distinction. It’s also not entirely true. Teague does draw from her own life and from those close to her. She mines lived experience ranging from heartbreak to misread body language to misogyny for honest, concise reflection. At 27, to quote another Southern writer, she’s made of wise blood. It runs through all these songs. “My songs are like journal entries,” Teague says of the six tracks that make up her debut self-titled EP, which was recorded at Memphis’ Delta Sonic by veteran producer Clay Jones. “And I rarely filter myself.” But, tethered to silky melodies, those sharply observed, plainspoken verses belie the daydream cadences, the lush arrangements, and Teague’s clear, graceful voice in ways that do verge on the poetic.

The ever-changing project of principal singer/songwriter E (Mark Oliver Everett), EELS have released 12 studio albums since their 1996 debut, Beautiful Freak. In 2008, E published his highly-acclaimed book Things the Grandchildren Should Know and starred in the award-winning Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives documentary about the search to understand his quantum physicist father, Hugh Everett III. The band’s highly anticipated new album Earth To Dora is out now.

Melody Caudill is a 16 year old singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California. Coming from a musical family, and learning how to play piano at the ripe age of four, she’s been immersed in the creative world of songwriting since before she was in kindergarten. After picking up the ukulele at 13, learning guitar became the natural next step. With inspirations from artists like Priscilla Ahn, Phoebe Bridgers, and Elliott Smith, Caudill writes with a certain sense of vulnerability and confidence. At 13, she recorded and released her first EP, Thirteen . Thirteen chronicles the life of a pre-teen navigating new life changes. Now 16, Melody has written her second EP, Teachers Pet. Teachers Pet captures the essence of what it’s like to be in high school dealing with issues of self-confidence and finding a sense of belonging. However, Melody isn’t to be boiled down to another angst-driven teen. Her songwriting touches the core of the emotional turmoil we all go through. Whether that’s feeling smaller than your peers or being afraid to show your true self, there are just some inner-struggles we never grow out of.  &#8220;Teacher&#8217;s Pet&#8221; is out now on Lauren Records, along with a brand new single, &#8220;Mosquito Bites (Acoustic).&#8221;

The Way Forward: Melody Caudill

Los Angeles based art pop artist Deradoorian just released her cosmic and hypnotic second album on September 18, Find The Sun. Find The Sun is not the record Angel Deradoorian originally sat down to make. It’s a waypoint on a spiritual journey of acceptance, the result of years of lifting veils that obscured her innermost self, and coming to the realization that in order to find peace, she might need to cede a bit of control. The result is something that could only be found by the physical act of its construction.

The inception of Wax Chattels occurred rather rapidly. Several years after completing jazz school together, Peter Ruddell and Amanda Cheng reconnected at a Preoccupations show in 2016 at Auckland’s legendary Kings Arms Tavern. The pair quickly decided that they wanted to create some noise together, and wrote a few demos before enlisting drummer Tom Leggett. It wasn’t long before Wax Chattels were up and positively running, becoming a fixture at local haunts and dive bars with their punishingly abrasive, yet polished, live set.
The band were a week shy of embarking on their 2017 DIY tour of Japan, China and Taiwan when they played a set at Auckland’s independent festival The Others Way. Captured Tracks founder, Mike Sniper, happened to be in the room for just two songs of Wax Chattels’ set, before he had to rush off to another venue. As it turns out, those two songs were proof enough for Mike Sniper and Ben Howe to co-sign Wax Chattels to Captured Tracks and Flying Nun Records on the spot. The band played an unscheduled set at an industry showcase the following night, which allowed Mike to fully comprehend what he’d got himself into. As the band have since said, “We want to play shows that make people feel uncomfortable. The goal is to leave the audience feeling slightly altered, like they have experienced — not just heard or seen — something.”
It is universally agreed that Wax Chattels are a must-see live act and their eponymous debut album captured this perfectly. Their hypnotically sinister debut was released in May 2018 and was supported by six months of relentless touring: a NZ tour, two tours of Australia, a stint in the UK and two major North American tours. The album reached #7 on the Official New Zealand Album Charts, and album release week saw the title feature as #1 in Rough Trade’s ‘Top 20 New Releases’ and AV Club’s “most anticipated album”. The album’s success at home and abroad led to the well-deserved nomination of Best Alternative Artist at the 2018 New Zealand Music Awards, as well as the band’s inclusion in the coveted shortlist of finalists for the Taite Music Prize and Auckland Live Best Independent Debut Award. After a knock-out debut, the anticipation that surrounds their sophomore album, Clot, is immense.

Cults were deep into recording their new album, Host, when singer/multi-instrumentalist Madeline Follin let a secret slip.
“In the past, I’d never brought my own music to the table because I was just too shy,” says Follin, “but at some point during the sessions, I mentioned that I’d been writing some songs on the side, and our producer, Shane Stoneback, asked me to share them.”
“When Shane and I heard what Madeline had written, we couldn’t believe it,” says multi-instrumentalist Brian Oblivion. “The music just floored us.”
What followed was a reimagining of their sound and dynamic. Written collaboratively and recorded with live instruments, the collection marks the start of a bold new chapter. The songs are deceptively charming, with lush, airy arrangements that belie their dark, weighty lyrics, with rich multifaceted production to match, blending retro &amp; futuristic palettes into a spellbinding swirl of high-def indie rock &amp; lo-fi bedroom pop.
Host is an exploration of the sinister dynamics at play in a parasitic relationship and charting a cathartic journey towards freedom and self-reliance, reveling in the power that comes from standing your ground and declaring independence in the face of exploitation and manipulation.
“Each song on this album feels like it represents a different step in the process of breaking free from whatever’s draining you,” says Follin. “Only once you’ve done that are you really in a position to accept something new and healthy into your life.

Blissfulness is at the core of Wiseacre, the strikingly purifying sophomore record from Eric Slick. Wiseacre is a location, literally. It’s the place he married the light in his life, Natalie Prass, and titling the record after it is an attempt at bottling the euphoria of his wedding day. The record isn’t just about the joy that comes from a loving existence blossoming out of a new relationship, it’s also about the hard work that it takes to get to that place. The majority of his time has been behind a drum set, spending the last decade rounding out the industrious outfit Dr. Dog, and as of late, touring as a newlywed alongside his wife.

Walter Murch is a legendary sound editor, editor, writer and director. His 50-year career in cinema stretches back to 1969 (Francis Ford Coppola’s The Rain People) and includes work on THX-1138, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, and The Godfather Part III, American Graffiti, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain, and many other films with directors such as George Lucas, Fred Zinnemann, Philip Kaufman, Anthony Minghella, Kathryn Bigelow, Sam Mendes and Brad Bird. Murch&#8217;s pioneering achievements in sound were acknowledged by Coppola in his 1979 Palme d&#8217;Or winner Apocalypse Now, for which Murch was granted, in a film-history first, the screen credit of “sound designer.” Murch has been nominated for nine Academy Awards (six for editing and three for sound) and has won three, for best sound on Apocalypse Now (for which he and his collaborators devised the now-standard 5.1 sound format), and for Best Film Editing and Best Sound for his work on The English Patient. (Murch had previously won a double BAFTA for best sound and best picture editing for The Conversation in 1974.) His most recent work is the documentary Coup 53 (2019), about Western interference in the politics of Iran, which had its world premiere at the 2019 Telluride Film Festival and is now available through a <a href="https://coup53.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">virtual cinema</a> release.

The Way Forward: Walter Murch on His New Documentary Coup 53, Finally Writing His Next Book, and the Future of Movie Theaters

David Arquette is the subject of the new documentary You Cannot Kill David Arquette which is in drive-in theaters from August 21 and on VOD on August 28. He has years of professional acting, directing and producing experience and has appeared in a multitude of films including the Scream franchise, Hamlet 2, The Grey Zone, Stealing Sinatra, Never Been Kissed, Eight Legged Freaks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dream with the Fishes, etc. David was featured as an arc opposite Jerry O’Connell in the series Carter, as well as a role on Creep Show for AMC and in David Ayer’s Deputy, opposite Stephen Dorff for Fox. David recently co-founded XTR, a new production studio, which premiered a number of films at Sundance in 2020. It was recently announced that he will be returning to the Scream franchise as Dewey Riley in the upcoming relaunch. Next up, David can be seen in Mope, directed by Lucas Heyne, as well as Spree, directed by Eugene Kotlyarenko.

The Way Forward: David Arquette is Choosing Self Care and Not Beating Himself Up (Anymore)

Dan Deacon’s newest score, for the HBO dog-grooming documentary Well Groomed, follows the release of his fifth studio album Mystic Familiar and is the latest addition to his collaborative repertoire which includes soundtracks for films Rat Film, Time Trial, and Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt, as well as works with the NYCBallet, LAPhil, and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Well Groomed immerses the viewer in the colorful and surreal subculture of competitive creative dog grooming, a world where prizes are awarded transforming dogs into flamboyant living art objects. The lighter tone and largely upbeat subject matter of the documentary offered Deacon an opportunity to compose with more playful tones and organic instrumentation not usually found in his work such as vibraphone, guitar, and piano. From Vangelis-inspired soundscape to Krautrock-influenced anthems, the Well Groomed soundtrack channels the ecstatic energy of Deacon’s legendary live shows more than any of his film work to date.
