Zia Anger is a filmmaker and music video director. Her debut feature, <a href="https://mubi.com/en/us/films/my-first-film" target="_blank" rel="noopener">My First Film</a>, is streaming globally on MUBI from September 6. In 2018 she began touring a new solo performance that traces the last ten years of her lost and abandoned work, titled My First Film. The performance was named by The New Yorker as one of the “Sixty-two Films That Shaped the Art of Documentary Filmmaking.” Her most recent short, My Last Film, premiered at the 53rd New York Film Festival. She has made music videos for various independent artists, including Angel Olsen, Mitski, Julianna Barwick, Maggie Rogers, and Jenny Hval; the latter of whom she also tours with as a performer. In 2016, Zia participated in the Sundance Institute&#8217;s Screenwriter&#8217;s Intensive, and in 2015 she was included in Filmmaker magazine&#8217;s &#8220;25 New Faces of Independent Film.&#8221; Find out more at her <a href="http://www.ziaanger.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">official site</a>. Why Indie Film Only Has a Future If We Embrace Radical Transparency

A filmmaker known as much for her versatility as she is for her passion, April Mullen most recently directed Below Her Mouth, a relentless love story shot entirely by an all-female crew which had its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival and will be released theatrically in the U.S. on April 28. Mullen&#8217;s previous features include: 88, an action thriller; and Dead Before Dawn 3D, which made Mullen the youngest person and first female to direct a live-action stereoscopic 3D feature film. The film was celebrated for its technological achievement and awarded the Perron Crystal. Mullen is co-founder of the independent production company WANGO Films, alongside Tim Doiron. The company has produced five films to date. A true maverick in the feature film world, Mullen is known for her bold and stunning visuals, ambitious shooting style, strong performances and unique voice. Selected TV credits include Killjoys, Aftermath, Real Detective, Bellevue and Wynonna Earp.

How Being Called a “Female Filmmaker” Helped Me Understand the Future of Cinema

Ryan Suffern is the writer-director of the documentary <a href="http://findingoscar.com/" target="_blank">Finding Oscar</a>, which is released theatrically by FilmRise on April 14. As head of documentaries for The Kennedy/Marshall Company, Suffern has an active role on a full slate of films. His past projects delve into a variety of diverse issues such as climate change, the LGBT community and child refugees. He and Frank Marshall have collaborated on three commissioned documentaries for ESPN Films. He is currently co-producing Boston, the first ever documentary about the Boston Marathon. Prior to his start at Kennedy/Marshall, Suffern documented the behind-the-scenes of four Steven Spielberg films. An English major from the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign and member of the Writer&rsquo;s Guild of America, he has written a feature screenplay on assignment for DreamWorks Studios. Prior to catching the filmmaking bug, Suffern considered a career in photojournalism and has had his pictures published by the New York Times, Rolling Stone and the Associated Press. Suffern currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Kim, and their two daughters, Pearl &amp; Iris.
