Award-winning director Niels Arden Oplev’s new film, Rose, starring Sofie Gråbøl, is now on the festival circuit and is the opening night film at <a href="https://cinefest.com/2023/schedule" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cinéfest Sudbury</a> on September 16. Oplev is best known for directing the 2009 adaptation of Steig Larsson&#8217;s cult novel, Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which was a box-office hit in his native Denmark and was distributed wordlwide, and the Hollywood films Flatliners, starring Elliot Page, Diego Luna, Kiersey Clemons and Kiefer Sutherland, and Dead Man Down, with Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace, Terrence Howard and Isabelle Huppert. On TV, he directed Millenium, the International Emmy-winning series based on Larsson’s books, the Steven Speilberg-produced Stephen King adaptation Under the Dome, and the pilot episodes for Mr. Robot, Dick Wolf’s FBI, and Vikings: Valhalla.

The Toughest (and Most Magical) Film I’ve Ever Made

Robin Tunney most recently starred in ABC’s legal drama The Fix as Maya Travis, an L.A. district attorney who suffers a devastating defeat after prosecuting an A-list movie star for double murder. The series premiered on March 2019. Tunney gave her breakthrough performance in Empire Records in 1995 and attracted further attention by starring in cult-favorite The Craft in following year. Tunney was nominated for an Indie Spirit award for Best Female Lead and won  Best Actress  at the Venice International Film Festival for her performance in Niagara, Niagara, opposite Henry Thomas. Among her many film credits are starring opposite Nicolas Cage in the thriller Looking Glass, Guillermo Arriaga’s The Burning Plain opposite Charlize Theron and Jennifer Lawrence,  and Focus Features’ Hollywoodland opposite Ben Affleck and Diane Lane. Alexi Pappas is an award-winning writer, filmmaker, and Olympic athlete. Her new memoir, <a href="http://www.randomhousebooks.com/campaign/bravey/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bravey: Chasing Dreams, Befriending Pain and Other Big Ideas</a>, is out now through Random House. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Runner’s World, Women’s Running, Sports Illustrated, The Atlantic and Outside, among other publications, and she has been profiled in The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, New York, and Rolling Stone. Pappas co-wrote, co-directed, and starred in the feature film Tracktown with Rachel Dratch and Andy Buckley. Most recently, she co-wrote and starred alongside Nick Kroll in Olympic Dreams, the first non-documentary-style movie to ever be filmed at the Olympic Games. Luke Eve’s first feature film, I Met A Girl, starring Brenton Thwaites and Lily Sullivan, is out now on demand through Gravitas Ventures. Eve is a graduate of the Australian Film Television and Radio School. Soon after, he established his own production company, More Sauce, and went on to direct a number of short films including multi-award winner Cockroach, and Australian Summer, winner of Tropfest, the world’s largest short film festival. In 2014, Luke created, produced and directed the online series, Low Life: A Black Comedy About Depression, which went on to win over 25 major festival awards and was sold to Amazon Prime and CanalPlay. In 2017, he completed directing and producing the follow up series, High Life, which was executive produced by Stephen Fry and stars Odessa Young, with music by Sarah Blasko. The series won over 30 major awards, including the Web Series World Cup for 2017, and sold to BBC3, Channel 9, CanalPlay and Fullscreen. During this year’s pandemic Luke created, produced, directed and acted in one of the world’s first multi-national lockdown series, Cancelled. Mo Troper Wants to Make Beautiful Art About Binge Eating

Low Tide is the recording project of Eli Oberman and Courtney Robbins. Robbins and Oberman are current members of NY feminist punk band The Shondes (Rolling Stone, SPIN, BUST). The Alchemist, entirely self-produced, will be Oberman&#8217;s first solo record as a nonbinary artist, carefully constructed to relate the “holy balance” necessary to facilitate a meaningful and contented reality.
Low Tide take the arduous expanse of existence and condense it into a series of lovingly orchestrated and tenderly sung compositions. The Alchemist conspires to embrace the complexities of life, the fractious nature of existence, the elemental way humanity seems to simultaneously be disassembling and recreating, in an effort to simplify how we all manage them — an ostensibly herculean task. Oberman was met with the visage of The Alchemist, a genderless symbol of life’s precarious balancing act that — if balanced appropriately — can engender happiness and joy. Existing in the pastoral crevices that have birthed such mossy-hilled folk-classics as Van Morrison’s Veedon Fleece and, more recently, the trauma-folk of Big Thief and the haunting warmth of Antony and the Johnsons and PJ Harvey, the band’s first release is lucky enough to not only carry this oft-under recognized style, but to insinuate such a unique perspective as to make something anachronistic sound fresh again.
The Alchemist, implicitly baked in the ambiguity of gender, the detritus of our internal and external lives, and a sweeping milieu of gothic romanticism, is a stunning document of not only a band in full bloom, but also an encapsulation of the world we all live in, offering not just a document of life in America in 2019, but also the world’s introduction to what is sure to be an electrifying future for the band.

Additionally, Kate has maintained a career in theater, making her Broadway debut in the summer of 2018, co-starring in the Second Stage Theater’s production of Young Jean Lee’s Straight White Men.

Kris Rey began her film career studying documentary film production at Southern Illinois University. Using naturalistic techniques and often working with non-actors, she went on to focus her career in narrative film. Her first feature, It was great, but I was ready to come home, played in competition at SXSW in 2009, was followed by Empire Builder (2012) and the short film Baby Mary (2014). Her third feature, Unexpected, starring Cobie Smulders and Anders Holm, premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and will be distributed later this year by the Film Arcade.
